Interesting day tomorrow. Day one of my CAA course (courtesy of Jon at Coptz). Took delivery of an Insprire 1 V2 a couple of weeks ago, P3P now posted out. Was not allowed more than one UAV for now...
Interesting indeed. A new thread would be good with your experiences and / or musings if you wouldn't mind.
The DJI Phantom 3 standard is now down to £449
Unless I'm very much mistaken it'll take the same photos that my 3 pro will take, but not 4k vid.
If anyone thinks this is wrong perhaps correct me?
Here's a link to my drone photo page - gives a good indication of quality. I set the camera to under expose by .7, take in raw and use lightroom to bring the exposure back if needed. It's the best way to keep the sky from blowing it's highlights.

Last time I tried making a suggestion, I got hung drawn and quartered, so I'm not saying anything.
Anyway, here's a quick edit of a nice frosty morning: https://youtu.be/Yjb0-Ixb_E0

Range is down too - not that you should be going more than 400 feet vertically and 500 feet laterally.Unless I'm very much mistaken it'll take the same photos that my 3 pro will take, but not 4k vid.

The CAA rules are that you can fly any distance so long as you're within line of sight and can keep control. You shouldn't go within 150ft/50m of people and properties, or 500ft/150m of buildings or crowds.http://dronesafe.uk/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/Dro...
You cannot take off with the intention of making money from your flight without a PfCO. That includes selling photos/videos, surveying and other paid for work.
You can get a PfCO (Permission for commercial operation) from various trainers which lifts some of these restrictions - it seems to be two or three days' work and around a grand depending on who you go with.

Visual Line of Sight (VLOS)
3.11 Operating within Visual Line of Sight means that the Remote Pilot is able to
maintain direct, unaided (other than corrective lenses) visual contact with the UA
which is sufficient to monitor its flight path in relation to other aircraft, persons,
vessels, vehicles and structures for the purpose of avoiding collisions. Within the
UK, VLOS operations are normally accepted out to a maximum distance of 500
m horizontally and 400 ft vertically from the Remote Pilot. Operations at a greater
distance from the Remote Pilot may be permitted if an acceptable safety case is
submitted. For example, if the aircraft is large it may be justifiable that its flight
path can be monitored visually at a greater distance than 500 m. Conversely, for
some small aircraft, operations out to a distance of 500m may mean it is not
possible to assure or maintain adequate visual contact.

Looks like you got your meters and feet mixed up. You originally said 500 feet horizontally. The CAA say 500 meters - and that's advisory depending on conditions and the craft you're flying.Visual Line of Sight (VLOS)

It does rather. A little ridiculous quoting one measurement in feet and the others in metres.
Agreed! I guess the height limit is a technical limit set by normal aircraft control space, but the visual line of sight is a newer 'guidance' for common sense safety.Has anyone tried any of the FPV kit? They were flying at the NEC last weekend and are scary fast.
We have just got back from our honeymoon and unfortunately the island we stayed at, drones were banned. It would have been handy to know before lugging it all the way over there!
Anyways, we got on a boat an headed out to a near by island for a quick fly around. Nothing spectacular, but I am starting to feel I need a P4P I was mainly trying to get some video, but here are a couple of pics I took

Where was this taken? just more curious about them banning drones. Did they give a reason or just politely ask you not to after seeing you fly it? That photo was taken looking onto Kuredu island, we were staying at one of the Atmosphere resorts, but when we arrived there was a welcome letter in the room with all the usual welcome info, and at the bottom is said in capitals that DRONES ARE STRICTLY PROHIBITED on the island. I queried it with our holiday rep on the island and apparently a previous guest had been caught flying his drone over the beach villa bathrooms (open air). Idiot!
