Just a quick question on the legality front, my boss has just bought a used drone with the intention of using it to take pics of where we work which could be used on our website/facebook page. There is a suggestion of using it to photograph items we sell as well. Is that something that we can do?

That's what I'd suspected. Can anyone elaborate in fairly simple terms please?

The CAA rules are essentially that if you take off with the intention of making money, you need to have a license. So if it's photographs you'll sell as art, part of your job or work, or a paid survey, you need a license.

A license involves a two or three day course, and published prices are typically around the £1000 mark. I have heard though that if you go in and haggle there's a good chance you'll get a better rate.

It's also recommended you read and understand the Drone Code which outlines the basics of flying safely and within the law. http://dronesafe.uk/drone-code/

You can't even take a pic of your own home with a drone and use that to sell your house.

Technically, you can't go out to take a picture of your house with the intention of using it to sell that house. You can go out and take some nice pictures for the fun of it, and later when you come to sell your house use those pictures.

It's one of those legal distinctions that can get a little murky. The idea is to distinguish between people who are flying when the mood takes them and for fun, and those that are flying 'to order'.

Although most houses will be in a congested area...

Here's one that is from a drone, but not quite what you'd expect.

He's smaller than I imagined he'd be.

First week with the drone and just getting used to it. I am only flying it above the sea now anyway to make sure I comply with the rules about distance from other people and property etc.

P.S I got chased by a pack of seagulls today!! I just dropped altitude and went full speed back to shore. Any better tactics?

Seagulls round here don't seem to bother me, buzzards on the other hand.... and yes, I too drop as fast as I can.

I've yet to have dealings with our three resident Sea Eagles. The ones with the 8 ft wing span ... yikes

And quieter. That, I think, is a blessing.

It was only when I dropped a bit lower around 100ft that they seemed to spot me, higher up no trouble. A few people walking on the beach were watching me fly the drone and witnessed the chase which was quite amusing.

I hope for your drone's sake that you don't have to have any dealings with them. Would not fancy trying to out run one of those.

Guys I'm after a little advice - looking through the Jessops website and I'm baffled by the choice on offer... Of the Phantom series - which is the one to go for? I'm a beginner to drones but happy to spend a little more now rather than have to upgrade again in 6 months time.
Also, noticed they do refurbished - have any of you bought these or should they be avoided?

Thanks and great pics so far!

Refurbed ones are fine, they don't have a lot of stock though. Depending on the saving I'd be very tempted by a refurb after seeing a friend's P3A.

There is a lot of choice, the one for you will really be dictated by your budget?

I'd at least go for one with lightbridge. The P3S is a great starter drone, but you soon become limited by it's WiFi only range.

Just reread your post.

Of the phantom series.. Phantom 4 Pro is the daddy just now, followed but the P4.

Next down would be the P3P and P3A which are both great drones aswell.

Mavic is great for the portability.

I've just added an Inspire alongside my P3S (like you said, 6 months and I was wanting an upgrade). It is superb but big and bulky. Takes more planning to fly than the phantom's

I'm so tempted by the Inspire 1 second hand right now.

Looks like there are a lot of commercial guys offloading because they have Inspire 2s on order...

That's how I felt. The camera is much the same as the P3A/P I think, but the machine itself is awesome. I just love the looks of it!

Plus it's upgradable to the X5.

My only negative so far is how big it is, the box is massive and it's not as easy to transport

The Inspire 1 is a long way behind the curve, so much so that the P4P should easily out gun it and most of the drones released last year will match it. It's a big beast too, so you're not getting much benefit for going for a 'legacy' model.

DJI are now only manufacturing the P4P and have discontinued all other Phantoms, so the P4 standard and P3 are all being sold as stock run outs as I understand it.
