Can anyone recommend a small drone to use in conjunction with an iPhone? We are off to the Maldives in the summer and would love to take some really memorable shots given the once in a lifetime opportunity.

You'll be lucky if you can use it over there, drones were banned on the island I went to.

The Mavic is the best for portability if you can find one in stock somewhere smile

Had a bit of a play the other day, I've only had my P4P for a week so I've still got a lot to learn, but I was quite pleased with this.

Thanks for the recommendation but £1k is def out of my budget. I should have said I am looking for something minimalist and upto circa £250. I noticed this one: www.airselfiecamera.com which is perfect but we travel in May and this kick-starter project only starts shipping in May frown

Up to £250, you probably won't get anything that produces a decent photo. Remember that barely gives you much change from buying a GoPro and you want the thing to fly as well!

The Yuneec Breeze costs £350 (or less if you shop around), is very portable and gets good reviews for what it is. It shoots 4K video that is 'cell phone quality' - check out the YouTube videos to see what that looks like. You can also get an FPV headset and controller after, for a bit of fun flying. A Phantom or Mavic will out class it - but the first is not something you can fit in a bag for the Maldives and the second is miles out of your budget.

Given the possibility drones will not be allowed on your island, the likelihood of loosing it in the sea, or filling the motors with sand and the restrictions of your budget, you might be better off getting a decent waterproof GoPro and making sure you take it out scuba diving.

I have been to the Maldives a few times and have considered taking my drone, but have always decided against it. I've no idea if they are banned or not, but figured it's such a beautiful destination, it's possible to get loads of memorable photos without the hassle of transporting a drone and checking permissions.

I concur that taking a GoPro is probably as much as you need to get some really stunning images both above and below the water, and you shouldn't feel like you have missed out on anything by not taking a drone.

Thanks guys, have take your thoughts on board and having checked we are taking an albeit short sea plane to the island which should allow for amazing aerial shots. GoPro it is!

That airselfiecamera.com one does look cool for basic drone photo taking.

Looking at it, the camera spec is pretty poor, and the fact that it has no ability to angle the camera up or down means that most photos will be no better than just holding a camera at arms length - or using a decent selfie stick. Video would be a particular problem.

Beautiful ^

Love the road as a feature.

Famous walking paths might be a good subject?

Here's a 3D point cloud, mapping a small area as an experiment. You can fly through it, view it as a textured 3D model and even as a detailed overlay on Google Maps.

The image shows seven million separate points all calculated from 150 photos taken as the Typhoon flew over the site.

That's pretty cool, what software do you use for that - does it come with the Typhoon?
