Go-Pro Type Cameras

Am looking to treat myself to a GoPro Type Camera - fancy treating myself!

What are the best options? I would like 4K if possible - maybe even at 60+ frames per second also.

I like the GoPro Session, however is it as good as the other GoPros?

Changeable batteries (with decent battery life!) would be nice.

Lots of mounting options would be good too!

What options are out there worth considering?

Sony FDR-X1000V 4K

The Sony has the best life at the moment, the new GoPro Session cameras do not have removable battery's. Something also to think about, GoPro have changed the battery design every single time they update the camera line, which is a massive pain in the ass, Sony have used to same battery design from the start with the NP-BX1.

All the same to tbh, most use the industry standard 1/4-20 UNC thread, GoPro use their own design but you can get an adapter if you wish.

Out of everything out there at the moment, the Sony with stabilisation, better battery life, WiFi that works, is the winner for now.

Image wise, in the real world you would be very hard pushed to pick a winner, GoPro tend to have a red tint to the image, Sony tend to have a blue tint to the image, I don't own a Ghost so can't compare.

If you have either the GoPro or the Sony in a car, can you power either from the cigar lighter socket whilst still recording (i.e. for timelapse shots etc)?

The reviews seem to suggest the GoPro video quality is the best in class, however some side-by-side comparisons with the Sony seem to disagree.

The Gopro can be powered from in car usb or external usb power supplies

There are lots of comparison videos on youtube, you can't always get a perfect view due to youtubes compression but take a look and see what you think. Videos like this may help https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uiGl9a4yYA.

When I was looking the general view I had was that the Sony was sharper in places but the GoPro had beeter overall image quality and ease of use

(ETS - I bought the Hero4 Silver it better suited my needs)

Thanks for the comments chaps. Ordered a GoPro Hero 4 Black Edition on Amazon today - will be with me tomorrow. Handy discount over retail also.

I know for sure that the GoPro does but you have to buy the USB adaptor, not sure about the others but I would assume so.

Yep they do, and you don't need an adaptor for the Ghost or Sony.

Filmed my first video - out on the motorbike over the weekend. It seems reasonable quality however the export from the GoPro software lost a bit and then the upload to Vimeo also didn't help the cause either.

Not over the moon with it but will probably persevere.

I went from a GoPro HD2 to a Hero 4 Black...the new one is an amazing piece of kit.

Love, among other things, the low light feature, shutter speed selection for long exposures and that it can all be controlled via the app on my phone.

There's a reason you see GoPro's being used all over the place in extreme sports etc

That's exactly what I bought and not so impressed yet. Will have to persevere with it some more!
