Overall, the original question is a tough one!

What's the best car for driving from here to there?

Anyway, personally my "walkabout" lens would be one or other of:

45mm Ai-S f/2.8P

Or

50mm AF f/1.4D

I can confidently bet that neither of those will get a cheer as a "walkabout" lens - but they suit me fine!

I think the 50mm would be a little tight on a crop body as a "walkabout" lens but you could easily get away with using a 50mm equivalent lens. A 35mm is a great "always on" prime for a DX camera.

Not at all - There is a small plastic ring in front of the zoom barrel that (appears) to seal the lens. Whether through poor handling or higher temperatures (I live in the South East USA) the glue has deteriorated and the ring comes loose. It's not a huge deal, but it occasionally catches on the lens when zooming and is very irritating. - Plus Nikon class this fault as 'wear and tear' so is not covered under their warranty or extended service agreement.

It's still a cracking lens for the money.

Thanks, Living in the North east of England high temperatures are not a problem for me or my lens smile

Interesting discussion, as Beano says, its very personal.

I do like the 18/70, and Im pretty much erring towards the 16/85 as I like the idea of having a bit more at both ends as well as VR.

I do have the 35mm as well as a 70/300.

16-85 for me....sold my 18-200 and picked this up on EBay. Price to swap minimal but significant benefit in performance.

After reading this thread I'm thinking of doing this myself, trouble is I'll end wanting a 70-300 too I know I will!

Once you have NAS.... there is NO CURE!!!

I changed from Canon to Nikon in 1997. Last year I just about got my lens collection where I want it to be!!! Guess what? There's a couple of lenses I'd love to change....

But I repeat: it's all a very personal thing - but don't forget, it's only a tool!!

Nice one.

It's as good as or better in every way to the 18-70 in my opinion so you can't go wrong really. Plus, if you really don't get on with it for whatever reason, they hold their value really well so you'll easily get your money back selling it on.
