Been googling without much success - does the Canon 24-105L produce significantly better images than the 24-105 USM.? It'll only cost me a couple of hundred quid to upgrade via MPB, but is it worth it? (Sticking with this rather than the 24-70 2.8 as I want the extra reach).

Do you mean the 24-105L v 24-105 STM?

I really rate the 24-104L but 24-105 STM seems a decent lens too - if it was me I would have the L but I'm a sucker for good gear smile

Worth looking at the 15-85 too, slightly different focal range but its a nice lens for quite a bit less than the 24-105L.

I've got the 204-105 and my Dad uses the 15-85 as a walkaround (both on crop sensors).

I'm given to understand that the 24-105 is not as sharp as it ought to be, especially compared to the 24-70 2.8L.

There is a new version of the 24-105 which came out just a few days ago, maybe it will be better.

I've never read that the 24-105 is soft focus wise.

The new version is over £1100, it would need to be very good indeed to justify that money when you can buy a 24-105 thats been split from a kit for probably around half that.

The 24-105 hasnt ever inspired me. Its not a bad lens, just doesnt do anything very well.

At 24mm it has a lot of distortion and not great corners, the lens flare isnt nice, and I am never inspired with its colour or contrast. As said its not bad , just nothing special.

The sigma 24-105 is a touch better.

See how the new canon one goes, all their new lenses have been great recently.

OP,

Which camera will the lens be fitted to? If it's a cropped sensor body, I really wouldn't bother, just buy the 15-85mm as mentioned above.

It's on a 6D, the present 24-105 is the standard kit lens. To me, it produces images that are fine, but maybe my standards are low!!

OP - I'm confused as the 24-105L is the 6D kit lens isn't it? Which one do you currently have?

No it's not - well I never. As above I would go for the upgrade although it's marginal smile

I doubt there'd be any difference in image quality.

You're paying for build quality, mine has been abused for years and still works perfectly.

Come resale time and it'll also be worth more. All L lenses seem to hold their value well.

The 24-105mm L has a reputation for the cable inside chafing and causing failure of the lens. If I could move one on at a reasonable price for an improved version I would. £100+ to fix, I think.
