New camera, is this just the start...
Discussion
Just ordered a Nikon D7200 from Amazon Warehouse deals, hopefully arrives on Monday. This will replace my old D80 which struggles in low light.
Currently use an 18-200 VR & have a 1.8 50mm which seldom gets used.
It will mainly be used for my kids activities, marathon kayaking & cadet parades etc but as I do a bit of walking I also want to take it with me to get some landscapes.
Two questions then, what affordable lightish tripod would you recommend that would strap to my rucksack & what lens for landscape without bankrupting me?
Have a very heavy tripod with trigger grip head, great to use but weighs a ton so will be eBayed when I get a new one.

you want a full sized tripod, if so how tall? affordable and light dont really go together well.
For a travel tripod I have a sirui T-025x but its not a great all round landscape tripod.
I have a Feisol thats about 1.2kgs and a markins hea don that at about 400g
My main tripod is a Sirui waterproof one at about 1.5kgs and a K-30 head 600g

You'll love the D7200 - it's fantastic.
What are you looking for in a landscape lens? Are you looking to go wider than the 18-200 you already have?
If so, your options are pretty limited as far as affordable options go - Sigma, Tokina and used Nikons are your best best.
I have heard good things about the Sigma 10-20, same for the Tokina 11-20 and the obvious Nikon choices of 10-24 and 12-24 - these last 2 are pretty spicy though.
I'd recommend using the 50mm prime - you'll love the images from your new camera

That's great to hear, thanks. Want a lens I can use for general landscape stuff really, the 18-200 is a good all rounder but I suspect it trades quality for convenience. Didn't think the 50mm would be suitable either? What are you looking for in a landscape lens? Are you looking to go wider than the 18-200 you already have?

Will take a look at the ones you mentioned.

No, the 50mm wont be wide enough by a long way for what you want - that said, I've used the 50mm for landscapes - it's a superb lens for the money and stopped down to f8 and the results are spectacular. It's also light enough to carry around all day. Will take a look at the ones you mentioned.

Can't help with either question specifically, but carry a few supermarket carrier bags with you and fill them with stone/earth etc. then hang the bag from the top of your (light) tripod to add temporary rigidity. Two questions then, what affordable lightish tripod would you recommend that would strap to my rucksack & what lens for landscape without bankrupting me?
Lens: Look at the exif data from any landscapes that please you that you've shot with your 18-200 and see if you feel you really need something wider than the 18mm end.
I personally am so very bored by seeing what I consider clichéd and unimaginative wide angle landscape shots.

Amazon have the Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 EX DC HSM Lens @ £312.55 at the moment...
It's funny this thread came about, I've been pulling my hair over which wide angle lens to go for with the D7200 - personally, I'm leaning towards the Nikon 12-24 or the Tokina 11-20 or Tokina 11-16. That said, the Sigma 10-20 stopped down to f8 or so will likely be as sharp as either of these mentioned and at that price is remarkable value for a new lens with warranty.
