Cant see a thread, so thought Id ask...

As a D300 user, it seems like a long delayed natural upgrade, and one I will be chasing in the very near future.

Just wondered what the PH togs thought about it ?

If I was starting again it would be my weapon of choice.

It does certainly seem to nail a few things the earlier models missed thats for sure.

Im pretty close to buying, and have actually rented one for a weekend so know what to expect.

The overall feel is very good, the fps is awesome, as is the AF ....

If I was t be buying a new camera right now it would be between the D500 and a D750.

Of course the latter is full frame so the big debate in my hypothetical self discussion is why would I buy a D500 when the D750 is a very similar price - what does a good crop camera offer that's better than a good full frame when they are at very similar price points?

I think the 500 aces the 750 with better AF and more fps....

And if you have a bag full of DX glass the 750 becomes pricey.....

Extra reach if that's important, smaller/lighter/cheaper lenses if that's important.

The main difference to the results regardless of which oscilloscope shows 0.4% lower noise will be the human behind the viewfinder.

I bought one in the summer but unfortunately haven't used it much, as others have said AF and FPS are excellent

I have one and it's awesome. I bought with the kit lens and also a sigma 150-600 c.

Fantastic af system. Great as a sport camera one for fast moving wildlife.

Way more features and quality then I can do justice but plenty of room to grow into.

I quite fancy the 150-600c having rented a sport - found it way to heavy to be manoeuvrable in the way I like.

Bump

I'm looking at getting into a D500, people still happy with it? I'm living nearly next door to an RSPB Nature Reserve so birds are going to be my subject

Cheers,
D

I've had one for a while. Very capable once you get the hang of it.

As I wasn't upgrading from a recent Nikon pro body, I went along to a 1/2 day D500 workshop Simon Stafford runs which got me up to speed with it much faster than if I'd have played around with myself for several days/weeks. Taught me a lot about the AF and metering in particular and I've changed my setup in a few areas which should give me better results.

The only real disappointment for me was that it eats batteries if you use it for video, but that may not bother most owners who rarely use it that way.

I have the D500 for about 3 months now.

It does eat batteries, but if you turn it to flight mode it turns off the wifi/Bluetooth and saves so much power.

Also if you have any of the older EL-15 batteries Nikon have a battery replacement program

Not had much time with it yet, but so far so good. AF latches on fast and the metering is way better my old D300.

Safe up to arounnd 800 ISO from what I hear.
