Can anybody give me a quick explain of what's what?

In English (Layman's) - just what the difference is?

In a nut shell

A CF card is solid state = http://computer.howstuffworks.com/removable-storage10.htm

A Microdrive is a mind hard drive = http://computer.howstuffworks.com/removable-storage6.htm

Both are the same size

doesn't a Microdrive use more power and is more prone to failure?

You could always get one of those 40Gb external HD jobies and a few more CF cards

That's the best route I think.

I'm coveting the Coolwalker at the moment....

Should be good for storing about 5,500 raw images (or about a couple of hours of being a bit trigger-happy! )

Get yourself an Epson P-2000 - it is excellent.

OK you Epson fans - can you tell me if it reads RAW NEF files?

I hear it's a brilliant bit of kit and the screen is (usually, hot pixies aside) quite amazing, but I've had different views as to its compatability.

I think the 4Gb cards would have to come down in price to about £40-50 to compete with the flexibility of a couple of smaller cards and a 30-40Gb storage system.....(which will probably only be a few years away at the rate technology/price levels advance!)

Good point - I'm off to NZ in December and planned to boroow a Phototainer from a friend - anyone know if they support NEF?
