Well done Phil. A box is much cheaper than a bed and they make great pin hole cameras!

Right then :-

Compared to the 10D....

It's big, but in a good way. I never had a battery grip on the 10D and I now see why people like them so much. It's heavier sure, but not so you really notice.

Fast? The 10D takes a shot, and whilst it's doing it the 1D MK2's merrily filling up your CF with 3 or 4. Much louder though. Really machine guns along. Seems to write to CF faster too.

Focus? Much MUCH better than the 10D as in a completely different world. Dim lighting doesn't put it off much either.

Picture quality? Hard to say. As good as the 10D but just shooting around the lounge isn't much of a test. More on this later I'm sure.

Other things:-

Controls have a 10D ish function to them, but not so you can seemlessly move between the two.

Viewfinder is fantastic. Makes the 10D one look like you're looking through a pin hole.

So generally I'm really happy. For my sort of photography it's great as it really motors along and you'd have to be a monkey to miss a shot. The 1Ds MK2 was tempting but for me FPS was always going to swing my vote.

Now I just have to work out what to do with the 10D. Having two bodies seems like a handy thing as lense swapping isn't always the easiest thing in the field. Does mean even more weight to lug around and probably a new bag to carry it all. Hhhhmmm. Not a cheap hobby this is it?

It's a cannon - what do you expect?

Now had you been sensible and purchased a Nick-one.....

Did you get the bed as well?

If not save the money and use the time you would otherwise have wasted sleeping to make a good return on your camera investment.

Well, I think that makes sense.

I had a long hard look at the 1d mkII but decided it wasn't for me, so I ended up with the 20D instead.

I could only justify it to my self if i made a return on it, which isn't likely to happen unless I manage to get a snap of camilla doing the can can outside an east london pub.
At a recent wedding where the offiial snapper was using the Ds my 20D looked like a toy town camera

I'm looking forward to seeing some great images from it

shame about the bed though....maybe if you unfold the box you'll not need one.

Still no bed. Well obviously I have got a bed but I was looking at one of these new fangled Tempur things. Cost the same as the 1D too. Perhaps not then

Next task is a lense re-jig.

The 28-135IS is staying that's for sure as it's a great lense and this copy seems to be a corker.

I've not had any issues with the Sigma 15-30, but it's yet to be tried on the 1D so we'll see about that one.

The 100-400IS may be looking for a new home however. It's a great lense, but I here a fast prime telephoto calling so I can't see me using it much. It's perfect, boxed and I'll give you good people first dibs if we decide to part.

I'd have to say, I'm very happy with my Sigma 120-300mm 2.8. No IS, but sharp, even with a 1.4x on it, giving 420mm F4. It's not too bad with a 2x on it either.

It's no Canon 300mm 2.8 IS, but it's more flexible (zoom) and £2k cheaper.

I used it at Donnington last weekend in very low light, behind a fence and it was great, see the track shots here

Nice stuff! The Sigma does look good and a zoom out to 300mm @ F2.8 would be very handy. Hhhmmm.

I think I'm going to write a little app to spin through all my 10D pictures, and see the distibution of focal lengths. That may point me in some direction or other.

On a side note I notice you used ISO1250 but mostly hold the lens to around F5.0. Do you stop the lense going to F2.8 because of DOF getting small?

Cheers.

The shots at f5 were with the 1.4x, so f4 was the minimum. I chose f5 to keep the fence out of focus, and be a bit above wide open, both for sharpness and depth of field.

The Sigma covers a great range for action shots, particularly with a 1.4x. The 1D2 AF works much better with a fast lens too. You get higher precision sensors working at f4, and more at 2.8.
