Further to my previous post, have decided to go for a Canon 20D over the 350D for the reasons mentioned by others on this website - size and controls.

Which brings me to my next question - memory cards - how much should I go for (was thinking 1gb), what make (sandisk?), etc

Also, what about readers - are they all pretty much of a muchness?

Thanks again.

The top brands seem to be Sandisk and Lexar: I use 2 x 1Gb Lexar Pro 40X. You can get 80X but 40X is fast enough for me and half the price.

Can't comment on readers as I connect the camera to the PC for download.

I use 2 * 512MB and 1* 1GB. On the whole I am a fan of more smaller cards rather than one massive card. Of course you can be changing cards when the decisive moment comes or alternatively you can be backing up to your external device when it comes - you pays your money and makes your choice. You know one time it will happen and you'll wish you took the other solution

For portable backup I use a 40GB Flashtrax. Proved good so far but battery life is not great. The new Epson P2000 is meant to be a much better screen and also has a better battery life in the field.

Sandisk Ultra II or III, as they have fast write speeds which is handy with the 20D. Have found my Lexar card is a very tight fit, and difficult to remove from the camera.

Have gone for 1Gb cards, as they are great value. Probably 2Gb also good value now.

My feeling is that 1GB cards are the way to go - I'd be wary of using a 2GB card since if it goes wrong you stand to lose so many more photos - and two 1GB cards cost the same.

My D70 claims to only fit 88 shots when set to Raw+basic on a 1GB card, but in practice it's many more that you can take - 88 is the absolute minimum.

I paid £31 for a 1GB Kingston Ultra on ebay from a seller called "flashman82". That name always crops up on here when the "what memory" question is asked.

Whatever you do don't buy Jessops - they want £86 for their own brand 1GB card

I use a Sandisk Ultra II 2GB, and a couple of old 1GB Microsdrives as backup.

However, you can fit over 200 (200-300 depending on ISO) RAW images on the 2GB.

And it's damn fast...

. . . . not forgeting the Scandisk 256mb card you get free when registering your 20D with Canon . . . .

Well it's a good back up, just in case.

I recently bought a 2Gb unbranded Samsung card from flashman (Kingston usually bung their logo on and ask for a few quid for the privilege) - very pleased with the whole process.

About £65 IIRC plus delivery. I managed to get circa 350 RAW (and a few jpegs to fill up space) pics on it (a D70 BTW).

Please beware, I also "purchased" a 1GB card from the same source 6 weeks ago and it is yet to arrive. Whilst I am sure that it has been lost in the post, the seller is very reluctant to post another or refund me. I paid extra for insurance. He keeps telling me to give it time. He's got until the end of the week

You're a patient man. 6 weeks is ridiculous, especially if you paid for insurance (why am I thinking he pocketed the extra?).
