Why?, well my brother told me there would be a host of great pictures i could take. My original intention was to try and take a series of pics called Curry house. It still is, although i have to find that angle of turning a shop front into something interesting.

Also i have found one of my biggest hurdles is myself!. Yep i am shy, well sort of. The thing is even though i have now got away from home cover for all my kit i am still nervous and slightly unwilling to get my kit out in public ( the camera ) Also an argument that nearly turned ugly about me taking unwanted shop pics didn't help.

I guess to capture the moment i am going to have to overcome this and be more willing to wear my camera on my shoulder and snap away. Oh and a shoulder bag is a must!!!!! this stupid rucksack is realy getting on my nerves now. Fine if you are in the middle of nowhere and need to carry some gear but not so good when you need a peekaboo type utility bag...Hmm, as in being able to take out a camera with lens on it and put it away quickly.

Also it rained, and rained, not even real rain but realy anoying drizzle. Still, i have 2 weeks off so hopefully no more excuses and plenty more pics.

Whist i'm prattling off the cuff i have noticed how much practice i still need with the camera. I find it hard not to take arty shots even though i still desperately need to get to grips with the norm.

Some pics?

Ok, i reckon you'll either love em or hate em but God i hope they are not boring. I took a card full and after a lot of tinkering this is what i ended up with.
Some of them are growing on me, a bit.

Sorry for the prattle

And maybe somebody can do something with this because it needs finishing???

Oh and a big welldone to Ted for his coding, just noticed a nice neat space between pics and the premade border come resize. Makes life a lot easier.
Thanks

Like the detail of the Piaggio scooter very much, nicely observed and composed.

In the "love 'em or hate 'em" stakes I'm defo in the 'Love 'em' camp, especially the rusty green scooter.

I wouldn't worry about 'normal' shots Bilko, you've clearly moved moved on from that. I might have tried some different angles, eg the bike.

Some nice urban decay stuff there although I feel sorry for the once-desirable GT6.

Re more covert shooting, a longer lens will help. And re quick access, what about a hippo bag? It's a small shoulder bag with a long snout that holds the camera and long-ish lens pointing down a la John Wayne.

Embarresment, or in my case 'lack of', can be quite an issue. I have had some really funny looks, walking along the beaches here with my 100-400 on a monopod, from some of the topless women (and thier husbands )!

Martin.

Why be covert? If photographing people it just makes you look dodgy. Use a wide lens to get it all in, means you have to be close to your subject, so ask if you can take a picture. If you get chatting, you'll get more natural and relaxed pictures. As the great Robert Capa said, "If your pictures aren't good enough then you're not close enough."

Thanks for the comments and tips guys.
Think you're right about asking permission, Brick lane has sooo many beautifull young ladies pouring out of the fashion houses

realy the mistake i made on a different outing was photographing the outside of a shop ( corner type ) when the owner came out and demanded to know what i was doing. I was quite taken aback and wanted to ram my newly aquired ( White armour ) L series where the sun doesn't shine. I verbalised this quite effectively to the shop keeper who then retreated.

Ok i could have been more polite and i could have asked permision but i figured i was on a public highway and i was doing no harm so what the hell....
Especially after a previous expo when i was told no less than 3 times that i couldn't take pictures from 300 yards away of Canary Wharf!

Sooo, this time i was apprehensive about getting my shots off spontaniously which spoiled a lot of chances.
Advice is now taken on board though and i shall give it a go.

On a different note......Monopods!

Am i right in thinking that a monopod will give me maybe an extra 2 stops? Still can't afford anything fast and a flash is soo expensive ( the one i want ) that i figured a monopod would be much more practicle all round. Perhaps a min45cm 4 section Manfrotto.

Simpo, i was thinking more of a Nova 3/4 or stealth reporter than a holster. Prices are not too bad on ebay 99p at the mo??????????to £30 odd. Just big enough for the body with attatched lens and 2 more lenses with room and possibly straps on top for the monopod. Anyone have any experience with the nova's or SR's? The SR's are more than double the price!

Well iv'e opened up an Ebay and paypal account so lastly....who are your top suppliers?

Depends what you want to do, especially if you feel uncomfortable chatting up street gangs whilst having £1Ks worth of kit hanging round your neck. I would. There's a time for portraiture (please don't use wide-angle for portraits unless you want the person to look like a ferret) and there's a time for hanging back and nailing the suckers au naturel.

Sometimes you want wide-angle for effect and loads of background; at other times the way a longer lens chops out the b/g and blurs it is nice. All IMHO of course

Working at No. 1 Brick Lane, I have to congratulate you on the fine choice of location!

Captures the atmosphere very well I think.

Have a look at the Domke range - very nice amaerican bags that are now being sold by digital depot after being unavailable here for a while. The smaller canvas ones are not very camera-baggy, as they are pretty small and light for their internal size, and not so obviously padded/waterproof/containg expensive gear type bags, especially once they're worn in a bit. Protection isn't as good as some bigger ones, but then you can't have it both ways... I've used a little one for a few years now, and have just got one of the bigger ones as well to replace a 15 year old billingham.

That first sand coloured one is lovely. Nothing to make you feel the part more than sand coloured action reporter type bag
Sadly though a bit above my budget i think. Tried the nova 3 out for size today in Jessops. Certainly big enough for a city type expo but a bit wide off the hip. I would be interested to see how the stealth reporter compares. Keeping my eye on Ebay

I've got a nova 2 which easily swallows D70, 18-70 lens, 70-300 lens, and room for another lens along with D70 manual, flash cards, card reader and cable, and room for a monopod to strap on. Plus it's nice and small, sounds like you should check it out!
