Reading the intruction booklet is fine, but it doesn't tell you what settings are the best to use etc for individual photos.

So to learn how to get the best out of the camera which is the best; Get a regular monthly fix from magazines or buy a book (either for your camera or how to take specific pics)

I'm guessing if you do specific types of photography the book may be the best bet, but for general information?

For a full picture (no pun intended!) I'd think a comprehensive book is better. A magazine will just pick on certain aspects that take the editor's fancy.

IIRC, and if you're a D70 clud member, there's a book by Thom Hogan which is very well regarded and deals with that model.

...and another by Peter iNova and Uwe Steinmueller, again for the D70.

However, I would (if your feeling brave enough) fully recommend a basic (and not necessarily digitally based) photography text book. The camera in your hand (or preferably on your tripod ) is just a creative tool, but learning what it is supposed to do for you is relativley simple. Once you have a basic understanding you can then see why the manufacturer has served you up the particular offerings they have.

(And in my case I can play grumpy old man over all the things I've paid for in a camera that I don't really want.... There's no pleasing some people is there?)

If you are a Canon user, the quarterly EOS Magazine is second to none. Packed full of useful and interesting stuff, you will definitely learn from this mag.

I agree with that. The Magic Lantern guides (were these formerly Hove ?) cover specific models but are much more readable than the (Canon) manuals.

You could also consider a course from Experience Seminars who specialise in Canon models but also cover more general topics.

They are all a bit far away. Exeter is closest and missed the courses I would like to do.

Got my EOS mag subscription on Friday.

Scanning through the (x2) mags they sent I must say it is good.

Many thanks for the recommendation, well worth it.
