Had my first play with the 100-400 this weekend. Now I just need to figure out how to use it properly.

My favourites:

(I should really try to straighten this one up I think)

More here

Comments would be greatly appreciated. I really must learn more about how to use Photoshop. I was really quite disappointed with a number of these when I saw them full size, but the unsharp mask seems to have pulled them back to respectability.

ETA: Damn and blast. I resized these to 800px wide hoping not to get caught by the PH resizing feature. Seems I went 50px too wide.

Nice, I like the WTCC ones most I guess because you'll always have a screen full of cars, very impressed you managed to get both the Terting incident and the moment just before Huff hit Garcia's BMW. All to easy to watch the action and miss the shot.

Nice, They look very similar to mine in places

Were you the guy with the long sigma stood just behind the fence in front of the raised seating?

I was the guy with the BAR cap on and Sigma 80-400 OS on the grass in front of the fence.

Will get my shots up later. Here are the first few.

Nice work! Looks like you're getting there with the 100-400IS.

Re the softness. Well, your mileage may vary with even mode 2 IS. There are times when panning that I got best results without IS on at all.

Secondly, I think @ 400mm and above you start to see atmospheric effects at times. Lot's of hot cars + track never helps.

Have you still got that UV filter on the front?

Is this too obvious?
or maybe too angled?

Thanks guys.

Darren: I had the camera glued to my face through most of the WTCC races having managed to miss every single incident that happened anywhere near me during the GT race because I was either checking a picture I'd just taken or something equally stupid.

I did however manage to miss Terting's revenge on the warm up lap that I've just read about on the thread in General Motorsport. Real touring car racing.

Rob: I knew someone was bound to come along and put mine to shame. I'll just have to try telling myself it's because I had to work around being on the wrong side of the fence. When I was at Abbey, I was up at the top of the spectator seating with a Canon 350D and Canon 100-400IS, complete with PH t-shirt.

Phil: I think I've still got a long way to go before I get the hang of the lens. I tried various shots with the different IS modes and with it off. I'll have to have a look and see if the EXIF data tells me which was which so I can compare. And yes, I still have the UV filter on the lens.

I was behind the big fence.. I meant the little one which seperated the lower seating section from the raised stand

Sounds like we were in approximately the same place.

You guys take some stunning photos! Thanks for the entertainment.

Slightly O/T. I'm seriously considering converting to digital SLR very soon and, not having a huge budget to play with, was quite taken by the apparent good value of the Canon 350D. As the photos in this thread are exactly the type of the thing I'm aiming for, do you think the 350 is a good choice? Would want a good telephoto lens too, at least 300mm.

Sorry for the intrusion. TIA for any advice!

The pictures in the thread above yours are taken with a 350D...I'd say it was up to the job, wouldn't you?

Martin.
