Agree on the use of M on camera. Used D20 and 2x580EX and 420EX. Could not get the creative lighting I desired. Bloody camera and flash combination gave "ideal" exposures every time. Had to set flash on M and dial in different flash exposure compensation to get results desired.
Best advice has been mentioned before. Practice, practice and practice some more with flash guns and its functions

just set it on something that isnt using too much of the flash power. two reasons for this - quicker recycling times, and also it gives the flash more latitude to deal with the exposure
