Multi region DVD players
Discussion
Can't help directly, but you're right: UK is Region 2 whilst US is Region 1.
I've seen multiregion DVD players for sale here, and specialist companies can convert others for a price.
Note that Regions generally apply only to commercial DVDs; if you make one yourself, it should be open-coded.
There's also PAL/NTSC to think about - will a DVD player you buy in the US handle a PAL DVD?

Not necessarily...
A lot of players can be made multi-region by typing in a code on the remote, I have had a few like this.
I am sure that you can find one in the US that can be modded like this - search on the web for things like "firmware region hack" etc.
Best thing to do is when you get over there, go to Circuit City or the like, write down a bunch of model numbers then go home and see if you can find firmware hacks for any.
Nearly all DVD players are region-free now, but locked to a region in software at the factory, it doesn't make sense (especially for the cheaper end of the market) to build different boards/models. However Sony are notorious for doing it in such a way that it is a hardware hack to get round it.
DVD recorders seem to be a bit more tricky, a JVC I recently bought can also only be hacked by hardware.

Even if you just get a cheap second player, it'll be much cheaper than replacing a collection...

There are hardly any multi-region DVD Recorders available on the "High Street" (Currys, Dixons etc) however, you can shop around and search the web and find some.
Richer Sounds will usually sell you a MR one for approx £20 over the cost of the R2 model (i.e. I guess they apply any hack going and charge you for doing it!)

www.multiregionmagic.co.uk in Peterborough only sell MR ones
When I was looking a while back I found:

that sell US spec region free players. I didn't use them so have no idea what they are like.
