Just bought a load of stuff from Pixmania (Canon S70 digital camera & MV850i camcorder).
Just unpacked the S70 and it comes with a French instruction/software pack . Should I be concerned that it is a "French spec" camera? The code on the box says "S70 FR". I thought Pixmania sent UK spec goods to the UK. Is this normal practice, or will I need to return the thing?
Camcorder seems fine but I am now concerned about that being some weird French spec as well :(

Oo la la!
That wasn't so helpful was it! Sorry!
I think you'll find... That the kit comes from the same factory wherever it ends up in the world, it's just packaged for the appropriate market.
(For example, mistakenly (and as a generalisation) Americans get all defensive about Nikon kit. They seem to have this hang up that if it's not "US Spec" from Japan that they'er being ripped off. When there's very little difference between the kit except some lenses are marketed in grey as well as black in the States.)
Pixmania have had some whinging because they didn't include local power connectors for teh market they're selling into with some of their early deals. But I think they've got that sorted mostly now. If your french isn't up to it (!) can you find the manual online?
Sounds like you got about what you should expect from the Pixie people. Had something similar with a Sony T1 bought for Mrs Beano some time back - saved a shed load but got froggie packaging!

Hmmm, it didn't say anywhere that the manual would be in French. It's the fact that there's no English anywhere which is weird. Canon camcorder that I bought at the same time has an English manual, as does the Nikon my dad bought a few weeks ago.
d/ling the manual isn't really the point, we're not talkin about something simple, you really need the manual for this!
Plus, Canon charge for them IIRC.

Aha.
I have found it - it's on the FAQ, but personally my first thought wasn't "will the manual be in English" so I didn't look it up . It's listed right at the bottom of the specifications table on the page about the camera.
Fair enough, but a bit poor IMHO, they should make it more obvious and at least offer to sell you one in English. Given that they sell a lot in the uk (hence the .co.uk domain) I think it's a safe assumption that most UK folks would want an English manual...

From the "technical information sheet"
"Manual provided in French"
It's the same on a huge amount of stuff they sell.
This has come up before and I seem to recall that while canon uk manuals have to come from their preffered vendor, someone said that you can download from canon asia...

Totally with you there. I've never got on with Pixmania. Having to work with some cheese eating surrender monkeys I know what they're like.
That said they are cheap. Don't bet your life on getting what you want when you want though.
That link's timing out at the moment.
I've managed to get the manual from the canon-asia site, and I'll get a work printer onto it
Not heard anything bad about pixmania before. If I'd realised about the manual I'd have tried 7dayshop or somebody. Not a big deal, but I would have paid them extra for a UK manual. Anybody know how much they are from Canon?
