Hmmm - I've tried the two best on-line printers and (although good - photobox being the best IMHO) the quality is nowhere near as good as my (albeit expensive) photo printer (I sell the prints framed for lots of dosh, so they need to be right).
To be fair, I haven't tried the cheaper photo printers, but the top of the range (read £450+) are blimmin' good these days... but yes, they suck ink.
Whiich-ever is best value, I like to be able to 'vet' and alter the output - and get it with a few minutes!

Having quized SWMBO a bit more, seems what she really wants is one of those dedicated photo printers for chucking out 6x4s of friends and family...
When the time comes, I'll stick with the HP and see what the results are like and perhaps try the online printers.
In the mean time, I shall keep searching for a camera!
Top of the list seems to be a 300D, they're coming in around the £400 mark...

Good idea. I have the 970CXi (top model in 1998!) and whilst ink is expensive, it does a perfectly good job of photos. So plan 4 up on A4 and see what you think before wasting good camera/lens money on a largely surplus piece of kit that can't print any bigger than 6x4. Also check running costs and compare with Photobox etc.

Cheers Darren - 'found' the Canon outlet on ebay, there are a few 300D listed daily, it seems. Big outlay next week (new central heating going in), so will likely wait until next month before I take the plunge!
Any Libra/RR progress?

In that case I'd say it's even more ridiculous to have a photo printer... I mean, I can understand doing your own large format prints with an expensive printer... but photo labs will be much cheaper for 4x6's. Does she really need them that soon?
As for the 300D... Isn't the D70 getting down in price now that the D70s is out? At any rate, even if I were to get a Canon... I would stay away from the 300D and go with the 350D. I believe the success of the 300D was just due to there not being any other options in that range before the 350D came out. Also, around here it's about a $150 jump from the 300D to the 350D.
If you want a temporary fix to use as your DSLR until you can find one that you like better, then go with the 300D. But if you want something to use for a long time that isn't already obsolete, you should probably look at the 350D and D70(s).

Well, my searching to date suggests the 350D is about £200 premium over the 300D (which is another new radiator, in DIY terms - house must take priority at the mo'), so that's nearly $400!

Hmm interesting...
How about the D70?

Both Nikons seem to average about £75 more than their equivalent Canon.

Well, the D70s is merely a D70 with the updated firmware available for the D70, IIRC?
The D70s also has a bigger LCD screen (but with same number of pixels as the original D70) and some cordless feature as well I believe. However the original is about £100 less, so better value IMHO.
Based on the time-honoured principle of 'you get what you pay for', spend as much as you can possibly justify. Have you actually had your paws on anything yet? How it feels to you and how logical the controls seem to you is very important.
Right then, spent most of yesterday playing with 350Ds in a variety of shops, and that's the one I'm going for (sod the budget, that's what interest free credit is for!). Shocked at how dismissive these places can be when you're talking about spending up to a thousand pounds (new kit for the missus as well...), with one notable exception where I was served by a young, polite, knowledgable, and extremely patient girl. Unfortunately her colleagues blew it completely when I went back later, and they will not be getting a penny...
All academic, the point is, we've also settled on an Ixus 50 for SWMBO (between Powershot 520, Mju mini and Ixus 40 or 50). Are there any issues with these cameras that we should know about - all the reviews we have read are positive, and it certainly feels like a quality piece of kit.

This IXUS 50 is an EXCELLENT little piece of kit - next on my list - I need a P&S as the DSLR is not convenient ofr EVERY occasion (bought one for my dad's birthday the other week).
The 350D is an incredibly competent camera which introduces you to the wonderful world of EOS - welcome to the Dark Sdie - you have selected well...
Okay, tapped up my local (independent) camera shop re. the 350 (bought my Minolta from them several years ago, very pleasant to deal with).
We've worked up a couple of options for buying it, and the Ixus and printer, all together and so on.
Question is, I'm going to push for some odds and sods for the SLR (thrown in, or heavily discounted): specifically case, memory cards, UV filter. Is there anything else essential you'd recommend I get at this stage (we've got a package price on the body, 18-55 and 55-200) to maximise my potential discount.
Looks like I'll be joining the Dark Sdie any day now...
