Check web and magazine prices before you do any deal.
Get an individual price for everything you want. As dobbo says, shop prices can be very inflated compared to the web. When going to buy, take proof of the prices you have found.
Just to give you an idea the going rate for a 350D is around £630 and you'll pick up a 1gb CF card for around £50.
Often companies will attempt to pricematch the most expensive item and make up the difference in the accessories.

Well, I am being pretty cautious! Their first price, which I am mulling over, is £665 with the 18-55, which is very competitive with other high-street stores. Like I said, I hope to get a package price with the other lens, and assorted bits; granted, it will not beat on-line prices, but when you factor carriage and insurance they should still be attractive...with the bonus of an actual person to talk to should it all go udders-upwards.
That's not to say I've ruled out other options...

Question is, I'm going to push for some odds and sods for the SLR (thrown in, or heavily discounted): specifically case, memory cards, UV filter. Is there anything else essential you'd recommend I get at this stage
Spare battery is essential - though you can get generic ones for about £10 on eBay.
Warehouse express price for a 350D is £529 or £629 with 18-55mm lens.
I got a battery from Swan Electron on ebay for £6. It lasts around half the time of the Canon original, but for the price, who cares!
If you want to get the camera from a show, why not use Jessops. They will price match everything you want as long as you have proof of cost and stock. This means a website or printout from the website.
I got my 350D from Jessops within a month of it's launch. They had it on 'very special offer' for £694. I paid £627 on price match! With it they price matched a second lens and threw in a Hoya circular polariser for £5.

Interesting to hear that - i've never considered buying a spare - I can shoot between 750 and 1000 images between charges, so a spare battery isn't on my list at all!

They do last a long time but eventually you'll take it for granted and set off for the weekend only to find your battery warning flashing halfway through Day One. Using the built-in flash and LCD monitor also use juice. Li-Ion batteries are great but go fast when they go, so battery indicators don't give much warning.
Having two batteries means you don't have to keep going back to the charger to top up, and when you do need to charge one, you're charging a fully flat battery fully. Li-Ion or not, I still think that's a good way to treat batteries for max life.
I got a generic one for my D70 for £10 and it's equally as good as the Nikon verison which they try to sell for £49.99!

They nearly got my custom (on the basis of price matching) at the weekend; Unfortunately, the service and attitude of the manager was so shocking we simply left. It's a shame as, earlier in the day (and despite my expectations) we'd been well looked after.
Incidentally, £694 is their current price for the black body, or £699 with free case and memory if you buy the silver body...which, apparently, nobody wants!
