I've been voluteered to take photos at a big airshow this weekend, for which I need to get a reasonably powerful flash unit. Which one do the panel recommend?

If you're trying to take flash photos of planes in the air, forget it!

For other stuff the Speedlight SB800 is the daddy

A circular polorizer will help with the colour / definition of the sky also.

I've been meaning to ask about filters actually. I use PS all day everyday so I'd forgotten all about my dozens of old Cokin Filters knocking around. Do you get similar effects shooting through filters digitally as you would with film?

Must get a polarizer though.

Fairford perchance?

I'm off there this weekend! I'd be really surprised if there was any scenario where a flash would be of benefit - even on the static displays. Also, the weather looks very good for the weekend so light shouldn't be a problem.

If you are going to Fairford (I'm going on Saturday) I could take my SB-600 with me if you fancied having a go with it?

defnitely - first one I got and it's makes some great photo's.

You can (as I'm sure you know better than I!) replicate a lot of filters in PS but you can't replicate the exposure time afforded by ND filters AFAIK.

Thanks for the offer but I really need a flashing machine of my own - I'm there all the way through Friday to Monday. I'm officially not there to take pics of the planes (I have a loathing of the endless repetition of grimy a/c undersides that get taken at airshows) however on Monday the departures are usually quite exciting, and a chance to see the interesting rare stuff like Corsair 2 get airborne so I might sneak some then. I need to be shooting into sun - hence the need for flash.

Bu the weather looks good - take the factor 50 and lots of water! (mind you not too much unless you want to spend all day queueing for the loo...)

No worries - I guessed from your post that you're WAY more skilled than I anyway!

In the left corner: The Sun. A gazillion megatonnes of fusing hydrogen that's hot enough to melt planets.

In the right corner: Yertis, armed with a Speedlight and 4xAA batteries...

Hmm I've also been comtemplating lately getting a flash. I was only going to get the SB-600, but then I realized that through special accomodations through my company, I can get an SB-800 for around $250 IIRC, give or take $30

SB-800 and filters duly bought. I didn't know you could get round and round polarizers for auto focus lenses - I was previously trying to figure out how to focus and then turn the filter

Shows how long I've been out of the loop

Well you don't hang about! Now you discover that tthe flash is marginally harder to learn then the camera

Re the polariser, careful with wide angle as you might get vignetting - especially noticeable against the sky (though you can always clone it out or correct it if shooting RAW)
