I notice that a lot of people here (with much more photography experience than me) are putting these black “frames” around their photographs.

To me they look really bad, sort of cheap I suppose, but as said I don’t have any experience, so why are they an improvement? (They distract from the shot IMO which is my counter argument), am I missing the "the Point"?

Cheers

It's all subjective.

Also depends on the shot, the colour and size of the border etc.

On a predominantly white backdrop (a la a PH page), a border can give a bit of definition as to the edges of the picture. Which is often a good thing.

BTW Paul - if people try and post a pic bigger than 750 wide, Ted's coding will resize and give it a black border.

Yes, the frames are there to help provide definition to the borders of the image, to keep the mind focused on the image and to prevent the eye being distracted and straying elsewhere.

Black and white are traditional border colours but the more avant garde use a border colour that resonates with a particular tone in the main image - this is where the debate becomes really subjective. I'm in favour of variety but not everybody is, neither side is 'correct', its not an absolute thing. The golden rule is that you should present your images the way you like them !
