Not sure if this is the most appropriate forum, but anyway:

We have a long term recurring noise nuisance problem caused by a neighbour. Noise can be very loud but only lasts 5-10 seconds. Recording it on a phone is problematic because a) It relies on grabbing/triggering a phone video and moving to where the sound emanates from, b) The phone mic doesn't pic up the volume properly.

What proper equipment do I need that can be left setup and will record the noise in a representative fashion?

Buy a cheap CCTV system with sound recording. Then all you have to do is make a note of the time when you heard the noise and you can rewind to the appropriate time in the CCTV log.

Surely it’s the noise level that’s the issue, so you’d want to record that

I use Decibel X on iPhone, so you’re recording the experienced sound level rather than the noise itself.i

What type of noise is it?
Music? DIY and other banging? Howling at the moon?
(I had one neighbour who did this!)
