Spent a bit of time messing around with my flash, a reflector and a soft boxed light last night in preparation for a little family time this afternoon.
I did want to shoot the dog but after much 'playing' I decided it would be better to shoot the dog and take some hateful self portraits?
C+C please - although I can safely say I don't enjoy lighting and flashing subjects, it is something I should get to grips with?!
The camera was directly in front with flash hot shoe mounted pointing at the reflector to my right and the soft boxed light at my left pointing slightly behind me. I was about 18" from the back ground.

I hate being in front of the camera so doing a 'serious' portrait was challenging?

I have wobbly cheeks and chin(s) so thought that if I should my head vigorously while taking the shot it might capture the ripple like a wrinkle wall tyre - I just look retarded.

More an exercise in lighting than pose and composition.

They look quite dark to me, not underexposed, but with the choice of backdrop I think you'd be better using one of the lights as a hairlight or something for separation.
The further away the light is, the softer and proportionally bigger it'll be. So if you've got some more power and space, try the softbox further away and turned up a little to get exposure onto the subject, then maybe the other up high and behind, pointing back at the camera. Reflector can provide on-axis fill

Mint, that sounds like what I'm aiming for.
Might have another play tonight?!
You might not look quite like this, but that's a fairly similar light set up to this image I shot (albeit 2 hair lights). The main light was a beauty dish high up left behind the camera, a reflector just to the right of subject and 2 hair lights out of scene, which actually are over exposed and a slight mistake in setup.Might have another play tonight?!

That really is expertly done. I'm still in early stages of portraiture; I'm playing around with flashes and lighting techniques and acquiring equipment to do so.However, I'm bothering anyone who isn't too photo shy to let me practice on them.
Grabbed this while we were out sledging with friends.

Wow - plenty of great work in this thread, but in particular Michael and DIW - stunning stuff.

It may just be how I'm looking at this one, but there's something not quite right with her eyes and I can't quite place my finger on it, is she looking just off centre?Gassing Station | Photography & Video | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
