Shall we do one? I knwo there are a few of us on here that love doing portraits and figure why not do a central thread so we can share ideas, tips, ask questions etc?

really like that Major! Paul, I hate critiques other than on a technical level because if the shot is what you are after, its what you are after. I guess theres no right or wrongs to it, so long as its more than just an obvious snap (in my opinion of course!) eta Andy there is always a use for a landscape lens

Only thing I have that could be classed as a portrait. Though I'm not sure I'd say portrait or snapshot...taken during my nifty fifty, addicted to F1.8 phase.

Cheers, stiggy. There's a very popular Polarize group on flikr that's worth checking out for some really inventive shots. Like most things, though, you can get fatigue from too much "same old, same old", but for now it's quite fun. Here's another:

I forgot the point of this thread and just posted a photo What I meant to do was post a photo.... ...and then ask for advice on the composition. Whether if you'd taken it you wouldnt have cut the top of the head off, or taken less scarf etc

Portraits are probably one of my least favourite shoots, I much prefer shooting people as they go about their daily life...two such pics below that I'm particularly fond of... Most of my other portrait work involves either, (a) gridgirls... (b) racing drivers... or finally (c) a random shoot for friends portfolio...

Whether if you'd taken it you wouldnt have cut the top of the head off, or taken less scarf etc I'm really not sure what I'd do wit that one (other than stop her looking so red ) My style is usually for tight crops on head but thats just style, I'd either like to see more of the hands or none at all. It does remind me of the old fry's turkish delight advert which has just given me an idea... What about these?
