Xanon - echo DDs response, ring not necessary in fact I prefer a speedlight on a bracket.

As a complete novice (I got the 100mm f2.8 a week ago) I've found the macro lens allows you to focus much closer than normal lenses, you can fill the screen with something around 10mm wide. The wide apeture can be used to give you a nice shallow depth of field for portraits and other shots too.
You need a flash as f2.8 gives you about 2mm Dof and smaller apetures need a lot more light. I bought a speedlight and have been using it on a bracket with a short cable.
So, in my extremely limited experience, you need a macro lens and can make do with the other things. You generally get what you pay for so I went for a decent flash that I could use for other things rather than a cheap ringflash that's just for the macro stuff.

I've had ring flash but didn't get on with it tbo (canons mt-24 different story)
I dont like the circular catch lights captured in the eyes of bugs, plus when you get to the mpe-65 they are too baulky at the front.
For me the speedlight, diffuser & flexi cord combo gives great opportunities for different lighting angles, like youself the majority of my shots are with it mounted on a bracket but I also get good results with it hand held (once the cameras setting are input)
ef100 is good, works well with a 2 x TeleConverter as it gives it a longer working distance, effects quality but not too much (good for dragonflies), extension ring added and you can get closer to things with no loss of quality, if your using your AF then it still works with both, although not as fast.
most accurate Focus though for non/slow moving objects is 'Live View' at 10x, love using this but it's tricky if light is poor.

Hi,
thanks for the advice, I have just ordered a Flash bracket and remote flex.
I mentioned my interest to a friend at work and that I needed a macro lens. He advised me to try a lens reversing ring, found one for £9.99. I have the 18-55 kit lens and a 75-300 lens so I'll give those a go first.
Also got a macro coupler so I can join both lenses together front to front so I can try that option so see which is better.
Cheap and hopefully cheerful.

Not done any macro stuff for a while so had a quick go at some droplets tonight just to keep my eye in

The reversing ring turned up today so I had a quick go.
I'm pleased with th einitial results but I need to play with the flash, it's a 580 mkII on an off camer bracket and I need to sort out the timing etc.
These are taken with the 18-55 kit lens reversed, pleased I now have a use for an unused lens, will probably be a lot better with the 50mm 1.4 I plan on buying.
I will probably by a proper macro lens in the future but for £10.00 this reversing ring has helped to get me intersted in the macro scene.
Hopefully my filter to filter ring will turn up soon so I can try the 75-300 with th e18-55 reversed in front of it.
I'll post up images of that when I get them.
Apologies that they aren't great but they are my first efforts with a 'DIY' system.
These arent the full size images, they are portions of the full size ones

Tame Hoverfly by ray_blake, on Flickr
It was sat on my left hand so had to take the shot one-handed. The D200 is a heavy beast with the battery grip fitted.

An old pic presumably? Surely they aren't around this time of year?
Always love taking pics of hoverflys. They are almost comical with their huge eyes.
Cheeky young whippersnapper! it takes us older gentlemen a lot longer in processing our snaps, the cold weather shrinks the capability!!! An old pic presumably? Surely they aren't around this time of year?

Where does it say that macro images have to be that recent?

Lens is the canon ef-s 60mm macro. Lighting wise, the watch was my nissin di622 on camera, with a home made diffuser and some card as a reflector. The orchid I had the di622 off camera to the right set to min power and used the on camera flash to trigger.
I'm just experimenting really, trying to see whats works and if I can avoid spending more money on off camera flash brackets/diffusers etc.
