Death's-head hawk moth, Acherontia atropos, very cool. Are you in the South of UK somewhere?

A few from a trip to Thursley Common, masses of dragonflies, nearly all of which were on the wing or out of range, bastids.

The webs these things made were fantastic.

Espanol!

Never seen one before but the dogs seemed like they wanted to eat it!

Excellent - think you'll be great at it biggrin

MT24ex is the Rolls Royce solution but actually any decent flash can be made to work well with appropriate diffusers added - I've seen some amazing shots with relatively cheapo homemade lighting rigs smile

The MPE is a swine to use btw - might be easier to start with a 100 prime + extension tubes ?

Been down the 100mm route before when i had my Nikon D200
had a Sigma 105mm and the Nikon R1 twin flash kit, i enjoyed it but fancied something that could get a bit more magnification.
and now that I'm a Canon convert i thought it would be a good chance to try the MPE!

the MT24ex looks quite good but is a bit out of my budget, might just get a couple of cheap flashes and make a rig for them, not
a big fan of ring flashes but might look in to them as well.

Thing to remember is that the MPE has a maximum working distance of about 4 inches - as you crank up the magnification this reduces to an inch or two once you're up at 5x. Beyond 4 inches nothing will be in focus. This means two things:
1. If the bugs are at all lively they're likely to fly off before you can get close enough
2. larger insects (eg a butterfly) are actually too big to get fully in view!

So it's great for small, static insects but cr*p at anything else. Be prepared for some frustration if you go down this route hehe

As noted by Mike (dibbly dobbler), the MP-E 65mm is a unique lens that offers its own unique challenges. Like, what to do when you encounter a dragonfly! I opted for this top-down detail shot of this Southern Hawker male that was in the garden yesterday. This is with the lens at 1:1 "Magnification"; as wide as you can go.

1/250th second, F13, ISO 100 + TwinLite flash. "Spiced up" a bit in PSE using Topaz plug-in.

Mole, good choice with the mp-e smile

A couple from today, the negatives are still wet! Shot with the mp-e and mt-24. Clicky to un-squish if you like.
