I stumbled upon this today.
I'm sure it's a hornet, the mrs reckons it's just a big wasp.
These are straight off the camera and the first Macro shots I've been happy with.
Handheld with canon 55-250.
Verdict?
It looks like a hornet mimic hoverfly to me, we've had quite a few in the garden this year but don't recall seeing them previously.I'm sure it's a hornet, the mrs reckons it's just a big wasp.

It was quite large for a hover fly!
I did think it strange that I couldn't see a sting.
A few of a cricket that paid a visit. Friendly little chap, he kept hopping on to the camera.

Upgraded the telephoto macro rig. I am now using a 500f4 Nikon Lens, and 105mm of extention tubes, and on the tripod a Wimberly style gimball head.
First time used in anger today, quite happy with the results. It is much sharper and brighter, and more stable and easy to handle than the previous rig.

And after a LOT of failures, and a LOT of *almost* shots, I got one of two of them courting. Its not perfect but if you have ever tried to take a photo of them whizzing about attached to each other you will know how much effort this took.
