I love what you are doing with the lighting on the bees, is it all natural, or is a heavily diffused flash ?

Some dragonflies from today : just didn't quite 100% nail the focus on the first, which is pity as I love the sunstars on the background.

Thanks again, the bees are lit with an old vivitar 285 flash that I have on the quarter power setting with the head a few inches to the side of the lens front element and angled in towards the subject. For most subjects I can reliably shoot on manual at 100ISO, f10 and 1/250s. the exceptions being white butterflies and anything on a white flower. The recent butterflies are natural light.

nice dragonflies.

I think it's one of the tachinid flies (because of all the bristles), but not 100% sure ...

Time to start searching in leaf-litter for springtails Mike. They love it cold and wet. Trouble is, ones like this are generally less than 1mm long ...

Managed to capture some tiny ( 2 inch ) lizards today.

And a dragonfly - no wait come back ! this is a dragonfly being stalked by a lizard. Don't see that very often.

Nice work.

Looks like the aero people went a bit wild when they designed that one. Makes you wonder how all works.

My pathetic effort compared to you guys! Using a 50mm prime and some extension tubes - I guess i need a flash and a proper macro lens!? (oh.. and some skill!)

Nothing to be ashamed of! You can do a lot with a 50mm but a flash (with some kind of diffusers - even homemade) would probably be the next step. I usually shoot around f9 - f16 and 1/200 - not possible without extra light smile

Thanks DibbyDobbler! - Would a Canon 430EX be a good start? although the NISSIN/Sunpac ones seem to be quite a bit cheaper - anyone know if they any good?

I guess i'd need an extension cable swell as i suppose this macro stuff won't work with the flash mounted on top of the camera?
