My pathetic effort compared to you guys! Using a 50mm prime and some extension tubes - I guess i need a flash and a proper macro lens!? (oh.. and some skill!)
Nothing to be ashamed of! You can do a lot with a 50mm but a flash (with some kind of diffusers - even homemade) would probably be the next step. I usually shoot around f9 - f16 and 1/200 - not possible without extra light smile
Thanks DibbyDobbler! - Would a Canon 430EX be a good start? although the NISSIN/Sunpac ones seem to be quite a bit cheaper - anyone know if they any good?

I guess i'd need an extension cable swell as i suppose this macro stuff won't work with the flash mounted on top of the camera?
I'd go cheap and cheerful if I was you - think the Nissin ones are ok. You can get brackets to mount the flash on but on top of the camera would be fine at least to begin with. Main thing is to get some form of diffuser going - I started with a Fong Dome held on with an elastic band - you're welcome to it if you want, just send me a medium sized SAE and I'll post it to you. Failing that you can build a DIY diffuser - just do some Googling smile

Will hopefully be frequenting this area of PHGS now I've got a decent entry-level kit here's some slightly-macro images:

Shot with Canon 60D with Sigma 70-300 Macro, with some settings that I can't remember...

Really pleased with myself. Got Highly Commended in the 2014 British Wildlife Photography Awards (Hidden Britain category), with this springtail shot.

That's incredibly generous DibblyD - ill sort out a flash first and then might drop you a line.. I'm sure at the very least I could hook you up with some beer-tokens!

Keep meaning to construct a budget diffuser of some sort, on-board flash is a bit harsh.

not a great photo as i've sold all my equipment now but had to get a pick of him when he fell out the tree onto my head!

anyone know what he is and what he's going to turn into? he had a very powerful spasm as self defence.

Did it fall out of a lime tree? Could be a Lime Hawk Moth (Mimas tiliae).
