Excellent - think you'll be great at it MT24ex is the Rolls Royce solution but actually any decent flash can be made to work well with appropriate diffusers added - I've seen some amazing shots with relatively cheapo homemade lighting rigs The MPE is a swine to use btw - might be easier to start with a 100 prime + extension tubes ?

Been down the 100mm route before when i had my Nikon D200 had a Sigma 105mm and the Nikon R1 twin flash kit, i enjoyed it but fancied something that could get a bit more magnification. and now that I'm a Canon convert i thought it would be a good chance to try the MPE! the MT24ex looks quite good but is a bit out of my budget, might just get a couple of cheap flashes and make a rig for them, not a big fan of ring flashes but might look in to them as well.

the MT24ex looks quite good but is a bit out of my budget, might just get a couple of cheap flashes and make a rig for them, not a big fan of ring flashes but might look in to them as well. Thing to remember is that the MPE has a maximum working distance of about 4 inches - as you crank up the magnification this reduces to an inch or two once you're up at 5x. Beyond 4 inches nothing will be in focus. This means two things: 1. If the bugs are at all lively they're likely to fly off before you can get close enough 2. larger insects (eg a butterfly) are actually too big to get fully in view! So it's great for small, static insects but cr*p at anything else. Be prepared for some frustration if you go down this route

As noted by Mike (dibbly dobbler), the MP-E 65mm is a unique lens that offers its own unique challenges. Like, what to do when you encounter a dragonfly! I opted for this top-down detail shot of this Southern Hawker male that was in the garden yesterday. This is with the lens at 1:1 "Magnification"; as wide as you can go. Dragonfly by Ed Phillips 01, on Flickr 1/250th second, F13, ISO 100 + TwinLite flash. "Spiced up" a bit in PSE using Topaz plug-in.
