^^^ Loving your swallow and housemartin Andrew! Chaffinch by dibbly dobbler, on Flickr Got this at 270mm on my Tamron 18-270. Two observations: 1. 270 is nowhere near enough to do bird photography properly 2. You can get away with *massive* cropping on modern DSLRs!

Plus - it's a nice 'urban location' chaffinch shot too.

Well I am surely no expert when it comes to bird pics but I was within about 20ft of this little blighter and believe me I could not get closer ! For a small bird a big crop is needed (at 270mm) unless you are about 10 ft away I'd say - not easy !

I have just moved from the 55-250 to the 100-400. The 250 could take some decent pics of mainly larger birds (duck sized) and I agree with DD's 10 feet for smaller ones. Fine round the garden/bird table where the birds are a bit tamer. To have any chance to get a good diversity of species in the wild 400 is the minimum IMO. No doubt there are plenty of exceptions on Flickr but I couldn't take half the pics I do with anything less and I get pretty close.

Small birds are a nightmare to photograph - worse than children! This was the best I managed over the weekend: Blue tit emerging by furtive, on Flickr

This is true, whilst its possible to get birds shots at 300mm or even 200mm, there is a reason why Pro bird togs use 500, 600 and 800mm lenses, often with a tele converter. I find 400mm on a crop body too short most of the time, especially if you're trying to get birds that are more interesting and you wont find in your garden.

Here are a few from me. I am being well and truly mocked by a pair of Greater Spotted Woodpeckers who are nesting on a riverbank near work, have tried every lunch for 3 or 4 days and not managed a proper shoot, here's the pesky sod: IMG_0768 by jimmyb156, on Flickr More luck with the local sparrows and pigeons though... 2012-05-21 by jimmyb156, on Flickr IMG_0633 by jimmyb156, on Flickr IMG_0632 by jimmyb156, on Flickr IMG_0722 by jimmyb156, on Flickr

Not the greatest of photos, but here's Bob earlier this week before his release back into the wild. He was found last year as a chick/young bird and the people who had him didn't have room for him so asked my dad to look after him (my dad looks after injured birds, although Bob was fit and healthy). Mum and dad believed that he should be released as he was still very timid of people. So with the good weather on the way they had him ringed last weekend and on Monday they opened his aviary door so that he could go when he wanted, and they would put food out for him for a couple of days just in case he struggled with life on the outside. Within half-hour he was back! However, he went again and has not been back since. Perhaps that's him Number31?!
