First outing with my new toy, and caught this. It is a pretty big crop, but its not something you see everyday. Comments and criticism welcome, still learning the lens.

I'd be happy with that, big crop or not. What's the new toy?

Nikon 600mm f4 AF-S Mk 1, that's an 80% crop, so I am pleased you like it, I would never get away with that with my older glass !

Big lens then! I use a Canon 500, there's quite a knack to using bazookas effectively, so if your 600 is new to you, nice one!

I went to Minsmere this morning, arrived at 6 (which meant I had to leave home at 4am!) It was a bit rubbish to be honest! Best being this Bittern, everything else was just too far away!

We'll I'd think that was a pretty good day if I shot that!

Did think about popping you a pm and heading down as well, I don't think I'd have made it for 6am! I take it that is when you need to get to these places before everything is scared off by the great unwashed?

Thanks, going over the rest last night, I have a couple of OK-ish common tern shots as well, so not all is lost!

The reason for going early is mainly the light, plus there's generally more action early on. You do get others there at that time, but if they're keen enough to get there that early, they're generally likeminded!

Nelly, how did you get that bittern in flight shot ?, as it what autofocus setting did you use ? I am having real trouble getting in flight shots with a background of reeds or similar as the autofocus system misses the bird, focuses on the background, and with a similar coloured bird to the background I find it hard to re-aquire it in viewfinder. I have been grabbing the focus ring and pulling the focus back to the bird.

It's tricky, hard to avoid some out of focus shots when the backgrounds are similar.

I use a Canon 1D3 and 5D3 and have them both set up similarly......1 point AF, no expansion, Servo AF and the sensitivity set to slow (otherwise the AF will be jumping around all over the place if you come off target.

Then it's just a case of keeping the AF point on the bird........

I found that having 1 AF point without expansion made the biggest difference, the expanded points made the AF hunt....I could have just been using it wrong of course!

Little walk near Jumbles reservoir and country park yesterday. I've got a 5d3 and the kit 24-105 f/4 lens. Normally I'm taking landscapes, but saw a couple of our feathered friends so had to have a snap away. really could do with a new lens with a bit more reach - any suggestions?

Both 100% crops.

I live very near to Seahouses, I have no tips to offer apart from wear a hat if you are getting off the boat and on to the island. The Arctic terns will be in full dive bomb mode and its sore without a hat. You'll have a great time, looking forward to seeing the results.

The farnes were briefly on spring watch last night.
