And remember of course that due to it's poor AF system, the 5DII is absolutely crap for motorsports.

After about a year of dreaming I bought a 5DMk2 24-105 f/4 to replace my 40D 17-55 f/2.8 in November 2010.

It was an eye watering upgrade, my old EF-S lenses are eBay at this very moment which I hope will ease the pain.

Was it worth it.......?

HELL YEAH!

High ISO performance is incredible, the IQ is noticeably better, the sharpness and colours of the images are better, depth of field is more pronounced. I am not 100% convinced that the IQ is £1500 better than the 40D and the huge RAW files are taking up a lot of HDD space but yes, it was worth it.

There are still rumours of a replacement in the spring so now you have missed the VAT rise you could wait a few months cos the new one will make the 5D2 price drop.

I am also in the same position, I use a 50D, with a 24-105 L lens a 70-200 2.8 L lens and a 60mm macro lens, I am aware that when I change the 60mm lens will not fit the full frame camera.

I have been waiting for further information on a 5D MK3 release date & specs. I keep thinking I should go for the 5D MK2 for a few months now, but will be unhappy if the 5D MK3 then gets released soon.

Yeah I thought that but then thought I would buy in Nov to beat the VAT rise plus the 5D2 is about £1000 cheaper now than when it was first launched. A 5D3 would make the mk2 drop in price a little further.

I also forgot to mention that the size and weight of the 5D 24-105 combo is pretty much on a par with the 40D 17-55 combo. The 5D2 is almost identical to the 40D in terms of controls and operation so it was a very easy upgrade to make in terms of learning curve.

Do it smile

I did the 40D to 5D mk ii upgrade in September last year. Am really pleased I did it, the 5D mk ii is a fabulous piece of kit! The follow on costs however then involved a bigger HDD and more memory for the pc, a new set of larger compact flash cards and an upgrade to the latest version of Lightroom so that I could process the RAW files.
