If you haven't seen this in the Youtube thread, it's worth a watch.

Interesting and something I fancy doing.

Guess I've just found my next project biggrin

Really like the idea of doing that, maybe with some more sophisticated camera equipment.

Very cool, I think a father and son did something similiar recently.

Are there no laws into sending up a massive baloon, most likely into busy airspace? smile

Yes - you need to alert them a month in advance - some links in the info on the video....

I'm sorely tempted to do something like this for a hoot.

We could send up Simpo - 'bloke with a balloon'. Great watch. Nice to know people are still being this daft/clever/fun etc...

All these it seems the battery runs out or the lens freezes over. I suspect the battery performance is affected by the cold as well as having to run a camera for 2 hours.

Which is why they put the heat pack in the box wink Although in fairness, I expect it had its work cut out at an estimated altitude of 37Km....

Amazing.

Wasthat an iPhone inside that they used as the GPS locator?

Would love to give something like that a go.

How did they guesstimate where it was going to land? what if the winds in the upper atmosphere carried it miles away?

surely it would've been done on a really calm day?

i'd love to do that sending my HD camcorder so high.

Seriously tempted to give this a go.

So far cost wise I see, a GPS locater,

from here: http://www.mr-lee-catcam.de/pe_cc_o2_en.htm

£80

A HD video camera of some sort - appaears to need to be able to record for over two hours at least. Any suggestions - wouldn't want to break the bank incase it didn't come home!

Weather balloon - £30 from ebay.

Tank of helium - £20?

and some bits and bobs for the box.

GPS locator was a cat GPS tag that sends sms messages with location.

I think as others have said, I might have just found a new project smile. Would love to do something like that.

Currently struggling to find weather balloons for sale though! Only one that comes up is on ebay from the USA but only carries 600g.
