Targa Panel Locating Tangs
Discussion
I have now fitted the new lugs. Not to difficult. I drilled the old one out then cleaned out the hole with a Dremel and a rotary file attachment. Put the new lug in the hole and the poured 30min. epoxy resin (available from model shops) in the hole. Let it start to set a bit fit a piece of polythene over the tang about 4" square. put the panel on the car and leave to set, then remove the polythene which should have stopped any epoxy sticking to the female part of the frame. Job done.
Sorry Peter but I don't remember ever receiving any, you are not alone though in me giving the advice and not receiving any pics. If you have still got them then please send them again or upload to a folder under the sch2011 picture gallery linked from the wikis above or my website and I'll download and create a page when next home

Mark - I have found the original e-mail with photos sent sept 2010 and re-sent. Please don't tar everyone with the same brush mate. I still appreciate your help with this even if more recently a bit miffed with you!!! Pete
I must apologise but I didn't get the above mail but clearly you did send them. I have got photos now so will make up the page in due course to help people. I can only assume my server settings stripped out the original email due to size or as junk mail. Seems weird as I was surprised not to receive any but then again don't want to hassle people as I realise some will and some won't contributeAnyway thanks for the resend
Mark
There's a male and female part. Normally its the male part that gets knackered (bit like life really). The metal bit you see is usually covered in plastic. If you look at the item on TVR car parts website you'll see the metal just forms the bakbone (the metal protruding on the new part goes in towards the panel itself and is not visible - its the plastic coated and rounded end that acts as the locator) pete
Thank you Deeman and mep12345 for the info on this issue. I have problems with the tangs on mine, the front tangs have rusted and expanded, they no longer fit properly in the head rail, and they are in danger of splitting the front of the targa panels.
The car is now indoors (a very rare event) and the Targa panels off. I intend to renew the tangs and reline the roof panels.
Are the tangs still available (and preferably the housings in the head rail as well) or does anybody have the dimensions so that I can make new ones in stainless?
When starting to strip off the edges of the targa panels, to get at the tangs, I found that the 'lining' of the black cotton 'duck' outer roof cover has rotted, no wonder the edges of the panel wont stay stuck down. Looks like I will have to go all round and remove that lining as well.

Wow, £22 each and 8 tangs! I have other uses for my pension!!! Looks like I am going stainless! Thanks anyway. I wonder if anybody does have the dimensions?
Why bother with stainless? They are out of sight and with a coat of paint they will last another 20+ years. I've just made some using stock 30mm x 6mm flat bar. The bar is fairly cheap from your local fabrication shop. I picked bits out of the scrap bin so they cost me a pint.
If you want to send me £100 I'll make you set of 8 and post them for free

....you must have watched too much Blue Peter ....
No, just went to school at a time when they taught us metal-work and wood-work and not this new fangled "materials science" or what ever it's called today.Blue Peter refused me a badge saying "no one likes a smart-arse!". Plus of course I'm tight

Because there's no messing around priming and painting only to see it scratch off in no time! ..... and it's not exactly expensive, and even cheaper if you know the "right places"

Anyone got a Blue Peter badge for Joe ?
Not having mine Edited by phillpot on Tuesday 30th December 20:20
I was considering mild steel but I knew Phillpot would only tell me off!!!!
I wasn't really. Unfortunately the tangs do 'chafe' slightly in the slots and paint will just wear off. The originals are steel inside plastic, once the plastic splits or wears through the steel rusts, and because it is enclosed it rusts very destructively. I have taken photos of what I have found so far in strippimng down the targa panels...not a pretty sight!!. As Arni said...I will be back!

Just a thought, but how about using carbon fibre? If you can find some off cuts the right thickness they could work well. Eg.
