Hi guys, encountered poor gear selection, found clutch slave cylinder weeping, trying to remove, bottom bolt no problem, top one wont budge, anyone done this with any handy hints. My knuckles are battered my patience short, and air a shade of blue...
Tried to loosen the bracket it fastens to but , No help, , this bracket wont actually come off will it,? seems to be held within the gearbox, not wanting to force it at all in case. Getting new slave cylinder, not worth a repair kit, have trawled the search facility, to get this far, but this morsel of information to remove the top bolt, would make quite a difference.

Slave can be removed from the bracket in situ but bolt heads can be close to the bracket making it aukward to get a spanner on
Bracket only hooks into the big hole in the bellhousing, all that secures it is the one bolt at the end nearest the engine block.

Ah thanks Mike, I have removed the bolt from the bracket at the front end and undone the pipe union so the whole assembly should come off to get at the top bolt... Great news I will restart the fight tomorrow after work. I was afraid the bracket was fixed inside the bell housing somehow, it wobbled but not free.

Still refused to pull free, pushrod wouldn't retract far enough to release the hooked bracket. So after much knuckle scraping found, in wisdom someone had put a 13mm nut on a 10mm bolt, the one you cannot see, and almost impossible to get to, so out now and off to match up suitable replacement. By luck found the jubilee clip, on the hose to the heater matrix connection just by the carrier bracket was heavily corroded, when touched fell off and water started weeping out, not something I would have noticed otherwise so saved a major water loss.

Yes, hoping to get a "mini convoy" of S's and maybe one or two other TVR's heading out from Solihull bright 'n early

(no exact meeting place, route or time yet)

During my inspection today, in advance of the Euro Tour, I found that my slave cylinder is weeping. Given that I will be away in Spain for most of May I want to make sure that the unit I buy will fit without extensive modification.

Mike S2 - I see that you fitted a slave from a 300Tdi. I was surprised that this had a 7/16" unf connection given the age of the vehicle. However, you fitted this with no trouble. Is your clutch OK now? Given that the slave should be .7" bore (I don't know if yours is .7 or .75). Please advise. I have a dicky left leg at the moment so any reduction in the weight of the clutch would be welcome.

As a supplementary question, it looks like my slave pushrod is in the small hole rather that the larger one in the release arm. I would have thought that this would have made the clutch lighter as the small hole is further out and should give a greater mechanical advantage.

Thoughts welcome!!!

Tony, I purchased an FTC 5072 from Town and Country 4x4 in Cubbington, I took my old one and the carrier bracket, with me and the pipe complete with unions, The knowledgeable guy I saw tried a couple of different ones, the outer diameter of the body was larger on the first one and would not fit the bracket, second one ( the more expensive one ) fitted perfectly and both bolt holes lined up, and as a bonus the union fitted as well, but he was totally happy to make up a new pipe or swop any unions necessary. This was then a straight forward refit bleed and job done. I have not noticed any difference in the weight of the pedal, still quite heavy, compared to any of my other cars, and the pushrod is actually in the smaller hole of the fork. I know I paid more than some on EBay but having the two there to compare knowing all options are covered and instant, was worth it.

I guessed that you had been to Cubbington. They are helpful guys with lots of Land Rover knowledge (although I am duty bound to direct you to a Land Rover franchised dealer for help and advice!).

Thanks for the feedback. I will order a slave cylinder on line, and maybe a slave to fit it, and go from there.

We could start a big hole / small hole thread to rival the pressure cap debate, but that may result in a red card from the forum!

Cheers
Tony

Of course you have Land Rover loyalty, and the obvious point that no 2 TVRs will have the same size fittings. Hope you get sorted soon.

Thanks for your help. I bought two cheap Allmakes FTC5072 (one as a spare) from an on line supplier and they were deilvered in time for this weekend.

However, do not feel too bad about buying a more expensive slave cylinder locally! Yours was probably a good quality aftermarket part and fitted straight in whereas I had to spend a fair time with the dremel to make mine fit. Now this is nothing against the quality of the cylinder as it would fit perfectly in a 300Tdi but the dimensions make it difficult for the TVR. I had to reduce the diameter where it goes through the hole in the mounting bracket and also create more clearance where the bracket tongue goes into the bell housing. So a word of warning for anyone who has bought a cheap one as a spare - it may take a little longer to fit than anticipated.

By the way, the 300Tdi cylinder has a .875" bore which is the same a the unit I took off! Clutch is lighter now (although still relatively heavy by modern standards) with a slightly higher bite point. No leaking cylinder and fresh Dot 5.1 (you should have seen the colour of the old fluid).

Exactly as I was thinking Tony, was the union the correct thread? Glad. All is well, and a lighter clutch, I got caught in traffic yesterday and now realise mine is lighter than it was as my left leg is not aching like it has been in the past. Oh and I admit my old fluid was very containated, so, Good news all round Sir. See you at the Festival of Motoring next week ?

Looking forward to the Festival of Motoring. The plan at the moment is to have chum Kevin as co-pilot on Sunday and my daughter Vicky will be co-pilot for Niiige. It is my birthday (yes I will be 39) so we should have a good day. On Monday Niiige will have Grace, his daughter, as co-pilot and I will have Mrs Niiige in my passenger seat. So, if you see different people in cars don't be surprised!
