Looking forward to meeting some of you at Burghley on Sunday - my first proper meet with the S after 4 years !

I have an irritating wobbly n/s mirror. Having read online they are a PITA to tighten up it seems. I have bought a new mirror base incase it is needed.

Is anyone a dab hand at tightening or replacing the mirror bases? If so it would be great to get a hand at Burghley, if you wouldn't mind.

See you Sunday.

Stuart

Yep - it IS a PITA. If it's just wobbly, more than likely the locking grub screw has come loose. It's hard enough to find, let alone tighten, but I do have a 'key' for it - of the modified Allen variety. I'll bring it along on Sunday in case you still need it. You'll need some masking tape to protect the paintwork... yikes

Does this relate to the original S mirrors? My drivers side mirror has just started to drop slightly every few miles.

Where is the grub screw for tightening, and how does the allen key need to be modified? I have looked for this before but not found anything that looks like it might tighten the mirror socket.

I'm talking about the later Citeron derived mirrors (electrically adjustable ones found on S3, S4 and V8S I believe?).

My understanding is that the grub screw is concealed under a black collar at the base of the mirror.

Quite difficult to reveal by all accounts and positioned so close to the door panel that an Allen key has to be modified (shortened) in order to get access without fouling the door itself.

I adjusted as follows: Take the mirror off, set the screw in the +/- position. Fit the mirror to the door, check how much it needs adjustment, take it off again, set the screw in the correct position and refit the mirror. Advantage: no special allen key needed, no damage to the paint.

Sounds like a good approach - does the door card have to come off though ?

Yes, you need to disconnect the mirror wires/connector.
But removing/fitting door cards is easy peasy once you know to undo the little nut behind the ashtray.

Good luck, Han

If the door cards have not been off before or if someone has removed them but been very diligent, there may be 2x 7mm nuts. One up behind the top of the arm rest near the ash tray and one further back in the door.

My door cards have been off so many times they practically jump off when I click my fingers.

having never removed my door cards before I would be interested to see this - Perhaps you should arrange a door-card removal masterclass at the event...

Or do I just look for a group of blokes hanging around an S to find it...Not sure what car you have Stuart, according to your profile, your S is the silver, Porsche -shaped one... wink

Ah no - that's my other love.

Here's the S, next to Simon's at last year's Silverstone Classic:

I gave up trying to tighten the grub screw in mine so I drilled a small hole in the mount in a more accessible place still hidden by the black plastic cowling and inserted a small self tapper wink

The grub screw is under the black plastic collar at the base of the stem. My Allen key looks like this:

It's 3mm (and it's back in the car now in case you want to try it, Stuart).

There's a bit about this in the S 'bible' and a whole lot more + pics in the Griff/Chim 'bible'.

Have fun,
Graham

Thanks Ragtop for helping me sort this - in the end it was just a case of the mirror glass not being clipped on correctly. A bit fiddly to remove and seat correctly but now sorted (not wobbly but vibrates with the engine as they are designed to do wink).
