Going to get a new one for the euro tour, which is best for loading the longers files. Help needed it needs to be easy to use as well.

I did some research before Spa on this subject and there are some pitfalls. You need a nav unit which has an itinerary planning function. This allows the unit to accept the multiple waypoints which comprise our routes. The routes will be downloaded to the satnav using a free programme caled Tyre for Travel. I have found this a very easy programme to use.

Many earlier TomTom units have this function but I believe that the manufacturers deleted this on later models so I would advise caution when looking at new units. I borrowed a TomTom nav for the last two years but I have bought a TomTom XXL Classic series, used, from ebay. It looks new and is about two years old.

I looked at many Garmin units but could not find one with an itinerary planning function. I also believe that some Garmins accept such routes but replan because the nav thinks that it can achieve an easier / faster route!

There is an older thread here:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=5&a...

By the way. I would not think about adding all the route waypoints manually - it just isn't really on.

Hope this helps
Cheers
Tony

This is essential. Many newer models seem to have removed this function. I have an old TomTom XL which works fine with Longer's route plans.

Whichever one you go for remember to leave the “common sense” function in the Mk1 human brain turned “on” thumbup

Haven't found cement works in the POI section, but as GTS members we can find those without any problems.

Not wishing to sound picky but shouldn't that read "If the car in front is a TVR And Has A Functioning SatNav ..... follow it"? laugh

No Jeremy, because then you will probably miss out on all of the magnificent continental cement works. frown

Terry, there can't be much left to do now.
Extrapolating forward, at your prodigious work rate, I calculate that you should be finished by 18th May. The only major task left is deciding which cap goes where on the cooling system. confused
Oh, and the two-weeks of road testing driving

I have to!! frown
Plotting the way points doesn't take long to do once route is decided though. Time consuming bit is deciding on the routes to actually plot!! Got most of it done at the weekend, just a couple of gaps to fill in now smile

Ian

I do appreciate your efforts so that we don't have to do all the time consuming work on the routes (and everything else involved in these tours!).

My point really was not to try and type a whole set of gps co-ordinates straight into a satnav, as I believe other people have tried before, as this would be a nightmare.

I always print out a hard copy of the routes but pity any poor navigator who has to rely on these as I think they would be looking at the directions more that the scenery!

I also went through this last year before the euro trip. The comments before are correct regarding the newer models, they don't have the function.
I ended up buying an older version through the Tom Tom website. They refurbish the older units.

I'll have a look when I get home at the model I purchased and let you know, link to their site below.

p.s. Before anyone else makes a comment, just because I have a sat nav doesn't mean I know how to use it smile

For what it's worth I have a TomTom one xl that does accept the tyre software route files.

I like L.I.am's idea of buying refurbed units from TomTom rather than taking the fleabay gamble.
