Steve, stay with the standard size discs AND get Ferodo Performance DS2500 pads ;-)
Done trackdays, Spa, Zanvoort, Zolder, Swiss Alp tour, Vosges track, never ever any problem

I have EBC spotty ventilated discs (turbogroove brake discs), EBC green stuff pads and braided hoses all round.

Seemed to bed in and work well enough over the Eurotour although I would say that my expectations of the brakes are lower than on modern cars, so I drive a little differently.

Size and better calipers are probably the only way to dramatically enhance performance, but I have been wary to change and potentially ruin the balance of the car.

New master cylinder fitted.....plus I had some new TRW standard front XR4i rwd pads in my garage to suit the 260 discs 60mm piston calliper set up I have. So pulled the pistons and gave them a good clean, put them back, bled the system again to try and chucked away the cooked and cracked m1144's. The brakes then work fine in gentle / normal use but having had issues I am minded to 'step-up' a level and I want rid of the 'wooden' feeling, which may or may not go with new / better pads and discs?

I suspect one of my calipers had seized (despite new pistons seal etc less than 18 months previously) due to tighter than ideal tolerances perhaps caused by excess heat in use caused by the bent clip behind one pad or simply caused by misalignment caused by the clip cooking the inner edge of the pad a lot and the disc a little and in turn tilting the piston causing a bit of seizing?

Having stripped them both down I was appalled to see early signs of corrosion behind the dust seal when the pistons are only 2 year old! The main body of the pistons is fine however.

If I am to invest in refurbishing callipers new discs and pads it seems sensible nuts to do some man maths and add something a little extra in the search of braking ZEN! bow

A mate of mine has a V8 capri driving with some mondeo v6 fronts that he is going to let me offer up ?

I am tempted to say the ideal answer might be the 283 disc / 278 but I am as yet unclear what calliper and carriers will work best with this set up. I want something easy to buy / replace / repair and that you can get seals and pads for without too much hassle.

So. Does anyone know for sure which callipers and carriers work with the 283 disc set up? with or without calliper fettling! I can then ebay some, try them for fit and have refurbed and fit if all good to go.

I have std granada / escort cosworth 278mm disks and same calipers up front only require a spacer to mount the caliper.

The mondeo setup is a little newer and capris port iirc use the brembo 4 pots of fiat coupe but that's not gonna fit 15" wheels.

278 are very effective maybe too much but they certainly don't fade with heat..

...pad type seems to be a big issue here - For Steve's issue, but also for my view on replacing pads in std set up what is the consensus:

Ferodo 2500s have good rep but a bit pricey
Green stuff cheaper but better than std
Others say yellow stuff is better for fast driving, but keep a cold use ability
...other say EBC "stuff" are dodgy as a whole...

????
Any one else with experience of this?

I have the 'Cossie' front discs and callipers (280mm) and the V8 discs on the back. I've had no issues with being under braked (with standard pads). Very tight on the OZ wheels. Indeed had to get one rebalanced as the weights fouled the calliper.

I don't know if the standard callipers use the same pads as the Cossie ones so investing in a set of Ferrodo's may not be worth while if you are not happy and want to upgrade.

I do have my old callipers just sitting in a box if you need a replacement. Just need to get them / it to you.

The rear drums looked in v good nick too if you need any spares. Didn't have any issues with the drums or the original fronts at Cadwell Park or Snetterton (rears).

IIRC the calipers you need for this conversion are from Escort / Sierra Cosworth 4x4, Granada Scorpio, early Mondeo ST24. The important thing is that they have casting marks 887 & 888. There are usually quite a few about 2nd hand but you do need to buy them complete with carriers. I got lucky & paid just a fiver on fleabag for mine... smile

See my previous post Steve, re discs/calipers with standard pads that I've used since the 2nd eurotour - no issues. Done a couple of track days and of course Spa / Nurgurgring without issue, although I was a little anxious (of fade) on last years Alps eurotour so have now just moved to a fast road pad (Red Stuff ceramic). On previous cars I've used Mintex 1144 and Ferodo DS2500 which were both goods pads - I found the Mintex very dusty though.

Red Stuff only fitted on Tuesday this week so not used in anger but they appeareed OK from cold when I drove home.

Reading through this thread and other related ones it strikes me that small change seems to not upset the car, larger scale change and you need to do sums and stuff (i'm too lazy and happy with the set up I've got).

Your choice I guess.

I think I am taken by the 278 / 283 solution.......just a matter of getting the bits and refurbing the callipers.

Meanwhile back to std pads atm.

the second i paid the man for some cougar v6 calliper i got offered some from a granada cosworth.

I understand the cosworth ones will have m10 fixings which will save any mods to the hub :-)

find out when they arrive
