Out for a drive earlier on, overtaking some cyclists when car just totally died. Pulled over to the side, engine turns over fine but won't start again. Left for a few minutes & tried again. Noticed that there was no fuel pump "whine" on ignition. Delved into the fuese & relays; found a blue/purple with 20 Amp fuse gone. Tried replacing, it instatnly blew also. Firend came out to help & strapped his meter on it advises that it is going straight to earth so pump is bu****ed? Not having any mechanical nouse myself, anybody got any suggestions? on the photos it is the blue one on the left minus the fuse-is this for the pump or is it the injector fuse? If it is the pump, how does one get at it/go about replacing?

As always, your help greatly appreciated.

fuel pump is tucked away behind the n/s/r wheel, a bit of a fiddle to get at/change.

Probably worth changing the fuel filter while you're in the area wink

You're looking for something like this

Fuel pumps usually fail open circuit. It's probabaly a wiring short somewhere?
have a look where the loom comes out to the chassis, the pump wiring runs down the top chassis rail IIRC.
Wouldn't be the first time the wire has melted or chaffed through and shorted out.

Easiest test is to get a 12v bulb connected to some long wires. One end to battery +ve other end to pump supply. Wiggle the wiring loom and when the bulb goes out you've found the short.

Certainly agree with that. In addition, the pump is not that likely to fail suddenly, they normally fail more gradually and the car would tend to stutter first. Not always but more likely. As your car failed suddenly I would suspect wiring before pump. Cheaper as well! Removing the pump isnt that easy, and they are not cheap. Very important therefore to check the pump is getting power first. With left hand rear wheel off, pump is on your left mounted to the chassis. With power off, note which lead goes to which terminal. Take both leads off. Stick a single filament bulb across the wires (if you do not have a test light or meter) and ask a mate to turn on the ignition. If it lights you are faced with pump problems. If it doesnt then you have wiring problems and the fun of tracing which wire has failed! If it was me I would be looking at the earth wire from the pump, it doesnt have an easy life in that dark corner!

As above - check wiring first. I've had the +ve wire come out of the spade connector and short out before. Similar symptoms to yours.
