Thanks guys.

At the moment I've just notified my insurance company. I can proceed with a claim if I wish to.

The clamshell is being held on by the light wiring and the gas struts.

I've sent photos to a local GRP specialist to get their comment and budget costs. An alloy rad is £400ish anyway so that's the excess. I'll make a judgement once I've got a budget for the clamshell repair. Then I'll decide if it's worth making a claim or not.

Why not just get an ordinary one?

If you make a claim you can ask for the cash to get the repair done yourself. That way the insurance company closes the case and you avoid all the write off issues.

I may well ask for a cash settlement.

As for the rad, well a recore at Aaron is £295 plus the dreaded. Will have a look if I can source a new rad.

I took mine in for a refurb the other week it cost me £180 + vat, the interesting thing was it wasn't recored it was a new rad with 2 of the mounting lugs brazed in as the other 2 were existing not sure what rad it was from. The reason I know is it didn't have the fan cowl captive nuts, which I wasnt too concerned about as I mounted a better way.
I did have some quotes that were 50% higher

a few years ago i had a 4wd 4ws mitsubishi galant that got hit in the side...........claimed and did a cash settlement deal at the full amount less vat.

Only a bit of plastic and two dished doors. doors popped out, plastic for 100 quid and then i spent the rest on begetting married.

cost me a fortune in the long run!

As Mike says this is a real issue and is the reason I have a dash cam in all my cars (I drive enough miles to get fed up with idiots on the road). Also this had the effect of immediate full admittance of liability from bus company and their insurance to avoid prosecution of their driver for failure to stop.

A reasonable dash for daylight only costs as little at £30-£40 and is worth its cost on the first incident. These also show close up stuff at night or if in a lit area in my experience,
Mark - I couldn't agree more - I also use these, but paid around £150 for an HD one, that records very clearly at night too. It tracks the exact GPS co-ordinate and plots it on a google map running in sync with the footage. I also used it to record some bits on the Eurotour - again brilliant quality. For the recreational purpose, I bought another large capacity memory card, and find with one large card, it can record a full days driving - so another reason to indulge. The evidence (provided your in the right of course, is un-contestable and your insurers will love you for making their life easy rather than spending weeks arguing. The ONLY downside, is if you live by the sword, you die by the sword. In another words, you need to drive to the exact letter of the law, if your prepared to send the evidence out. The other piece that continues to bother me, is this whole culture of recording wars. Many cyclists and motorcyclists use them - I thought, you know what - you cyclists aren't always in the right by any stretch - so here's some counter footage. It just strikes me as an indictment of the ways things are, but with 2000 cars per square inch down here, your a fool not to.

Quick update.

Finally got round to stripping the clamshell off earlier this evening.

Looks like there's more damage than I thought. The main chassis seems fine. The radiator frame and bonnet mounts are all borked.

Tuesday will be used to contact the insurer to discuss options.

Don't think it'll be fixed before Oulton Park in November. So the MOT in Jan is the target.

As long as the main chassis is straight then everything else is easy (ish)

Update;

Spoke to the insurer who have the car listed as repairable. So have started a claim.

They are coming back to me with the details of the repair firm.

With everything I have on at the moment 'offloading' this repair seems a sensible option.
