Just got back from a quick spin and noticed that the speedo was working fine but the mileometer is not working.....is there no ending to the little things that can pop up??? Anyway just wondered what you all would do to repair it, or does it need to be taken out and repaired by a proffesional gauge technician?? If so does anyone know anywhere?
Thanks all
brett

What's it stuck on? Ie the mileage?

Cheers

Mine has been stuck ever since I bought it, on xxx99 - quite common they get stuck when clicking over to 0 apparently.

I have been told the only fix is to take it out and send it off to a gauge repairer like speedycables, but I have never bothered as it seems very expensive.

I do have an Excel spreadsheet of every journey I have made in it since I got it so I know how many miles it has done give or take a few hundred (I know it packed up between the previous MOT and me buying it!) nerd

Apparently a judicious tap in the right place might fix it, or it might sort itself out, but I have been waiting 3500 miles so far...

Would you mind reporting back? It does annoy me and I would like to fix it (not least because I have to rely on the fuel guage rather than knowing how many miles I have done since the last fillup!)

Memory from brain cells is that this is a known fault on VDO speedos.
And the cause of failure can be attributed to resetting the odometer whilst on the move... So dont do it, just in case ! Damage can be to cog or worm gear... A friend got parts out of Porsche clock... Sorry dont know details. Ebay has Porsche repair cog (in Auz) listed... Maybe they know of fault too ?

Mine neither. It stuck in 9.9 for some time, only freeing itself after a rather spirited drive back from the Nurburgring on the Spa Eurotour.

My odometer didn't work for my first 6 month ownership of my S. Then as if by magic it started working again after travelling down a bumpy road. It's worked ever since.scratchchin

None of those 3 got mine working though in fairness it was early morning rather than night when the cold spell spat off the road backwards. Wouldn't want to try any bigger bumps than thatfrown
I'll be pleased to find out how people get on with fixing as it been too long that I've been ignoring this-MOT chap was getting suspicious last year!

Hi Guys... In my prev reply I guessed I incorrectly used 'odometer' instead of 'tripmeter'... And of course there isnt one on my S3.... Sorry ! But maybe its still a common problem with VDO clocks of that era. As I did see a seized/snapped worm gear. TB.

  • ***UPDATE*****
Speedy cables have got back to me, very pleased....they said a ball park figure for fixing would be £85.00 Plus postage and packing when returning it to me. Very pleased with price, so it is just a small matter of taking it out of the dash now...

Jeez - usually this is really simple. My old S2 was stuck and the wisdom back then was to run it down the stippled line at the side of a motorway or dual carriageway and tap the glass bezel as hard as you dare, at the same time. Worked a treat on mine everytime its happened (which is twice). Much cheaper solution.

Thanks brettster, that is very useful to know. May well do that myself once the crap weather really kicks in. I have tapped the glass as hard as I dare and believe me I have been down some potholes big enough to need a hard hat and climbing gear to get out but it's never budged. Never tried both at the same time though...
