Hi All

I have just managed to crack my windscreen (no idea how, it just decided to).

I have insurance to cover it, but is there likely to be an issue getting hold of one? It is one of the green screens if that makes a difference.

it would be good to find somewhere that will do a quality job.

Well, I'm going to risk Autoglass.

I'm not sure I'm doing wisely, but when I called, their system said the job could only be done at an outlet, and would take 1/2 a day which I thought promising.

I also had a word with the guy and he seemed to know what he was talking about which was encouraging. Possibly I have been being rather unfair to them by thinking of them as a kind of windscreen Kwik-Fit.

Cheers for the link. I did a search, but it only came up with a thread from 2009!

I had mine replaced at Autoglass in Leicester a few weeks ago. They did a good job fitting and sealing the glass. It is not perfect, but a lot better than some of the pictures I have seen posted on the forums. The front lip of the screen does seem to stand away from the frame a few mm at the bottom between the wipers causing a very slight lip which I do not remember being there with the previous screen. It does seem to fit on the other three edges and corners without any issues. It also looks ok from the inside. They did a very good job of keeping the interior trim in place. My only gripe is the amount of glass shards I found in the car when I got the car back.

The chap fitting it said he hates doing TVR screens as the outcome is so dependent on the shape and finish of the frame and car itself which is out of his control, and there is nothing to hide the sealant which he gets one shot at getting right.

They also insisted that the roof was in place for the fitting, and the work was done at their workshop..

They had clear screens in stock, but green were on a 6 week delivery.

I did put new wipers on the car at the same time, and fitted a 14" rather than 16" to the passenger side. Very little difference in the swept area that is noticeable from the drivers side, but it does mean that the end of the wiper is on the glass rather than hanging off the glass and on to the bulkhead in the corner where a tax disc would normally be.

I did wonder whether the 'bespoke' nature of the cars might cause issues...!

Good luck, and please let us all know how it goes.

I would like to know if it is possible to still get a screen with the green top tint that you currently have.

After the replacement screen is fitted, have a good look at your soft trim on the inside hard up against the glass. I`ve heard that some companies use a cheese wire to get the old screen out and this can cut your lovely trim.

I think I might take some photos around the windscreen area, just in case there is damage later.

We had no problem with Autoglass (newly restored classic '68 Porsche)but they needed to be fully aware of the job so they could get the right man to do it.

I'd be very interested to know if they use a proper UV resistant product for the backfill. AFAIK, their supplier currently doesn't stock one (and hasn't for quite some time) and of the jobs I've had to put right, one had silicone and the the other had Dumdum.

It's booked in for Tuesday. I hope it goes well...

I'm not sure who they're supplier is, but they seemed to be able to source the screen quickly enough (a green one too).

If this wasn't an insurance job, I would probably have gone to one of the recommended people here, but that would have over doubled the excess and sadly I really don't have the money right now. I wasn't really planning on this at all.

I will have to be happy with the job though, or it will have to be done again which is a load of aggro I can well do without...!

A little late to the party but
+ 1 for National Windscreens who came out to my workplace and spent 5 hours cutting and pushing to get the old screen out, then fitted new one ( Clear ) from stock. I feel sorry for the 3 other people who were waiting for them to go and fit their screens, having to wait while they struggled with mine that was original 24 year old with 24 year old adhesive sealant. ! I only paid my excess of £50 as well bargain !!

Thought I'd give people a quick update in case it helps anyone else in the future.

Just got the screen changed at Autoglass Watford. Very happy with how its turned out. Admittedly it took almost 5 hours, but they did say it could be a lengthy job.

They managed to get a green screen in a couple of days, and it now looks better than before. It has had a replacement screen already though, so this is not compared to a factory install (which may or may not have been better!).
