I know that stainless nuts and bolts shouldn't be used on wishbones, dampers etc but is it ok to use them on ARB mounting brackets?

Thanks

Personally I would opt for high tensile bolts. Strength before bling.
But that's just me.

Yes, imho

Those two clamps are not under any particularly high stresses or forces, the bar is merely twisting within them. worst case senario, a bolt fails, the anti roll bar does not provide any location for the steering or suspension... unless driving near the limit I doubt you'd notice?

They're a good size bolt, M10, if you have a spare or two try clamping one in the vice and with a bar and socket "tighten it" until it snaps then whack fcensoredk out of another with a big hammer, they're not exactly made of chocolate!

My nice rust and corrosion free s/s bolts haven't self destructed yet, they've been on a year or two now and seen some enthusiastic driving wink

Original bolts are "standard" 8.8's not anything special

I wouldn't fit stainless bolts to anything suspension or brake related, but that's just my opinion.

Phillpot is probably right, BUT! I am afraid I am with glenrobbo, magpies and Kitschski on this one. I cannot be SURE they will perform the same under stress and over time. With stressed brake, steering and suspension parts I am going to take the 'rather safe than sorry' option.

But that was my whole point, I don't believe they are "stressed" holding those clamps on? All four bolts could drop out and the steering will not be effected nor will the suspension collapse!

I'm with Phillpot on this one. The stainless bolts are a lot stronger than the bent metal brackets and there are no direct shock loads taken. I have stainless bolts on my ARB brackets and no problems. Nor did my diligent MOT man object to them.

Same on the back, high tensile cap heads where it matters, stainless where it doesn't wink

It's true that the likelihood of having an issue having fitted stainless bolts is remote, but then you could argue there's no point wearing a seatbelt in an S as the top boss is just glassed into the body (so would probably rip out and beat you round the back of the head anyway) and half the S' out there probably have rotten outriggers and seatbelt mounts, so we may as well not wear seatbelts biggrin

The only benefit a stainless bolt will give you is aesthetics. Just depends how vein you are I suppose laugh

......says the guy who's painted his engine and fitted spacers to the hubs. silly

that top mount is welded to an arc of steel strip, glassed into the body, that goes about 1/3 way round the wheel arch.... you won't rip that out in a hurry !

and still being able to undo it in five or ten years time without drowning it in "Plus Gas" and getting a few skinned knuckles could be handy wink

Ah I can't say I've ever had one sheer or seize up. Suspension bolts, yes. ARB, no.

I didn't know about the arc. Makes me slightly more reassured now!

Looking forward 5 or 10 years is quite scary for me, even wirh Halloween almost upon us. yikes
I reckon that there must be a ship out there somewhere, constructed entirely of stainless steel.
She is called the S.S. Phillpot.

God bless her and all who sail in her.

All I know is, I'm far too old to die young, and I have enjoyed life so far.
I shall continue to do so until the nurse cries enough. wink

Thanks for your replies on this.

On the HT comments, I'm sure I have read somewhere that HT bolts shouldn't be used for suspension, something to do with having a bang and the chassis bending rather than the bolt?

Edited to add; theres nothing about using HT bolts in the bolts wiki.

2nd Edit...I'm getting confused the advice was not to use very hight tensile bolts, I did order HT bolts grade 8.8.
