Insurance comes up next week shopping around I can save over £300 if I have an immobiliser fitted by a professional with paperwork. Any suggestions as to where Mids/Herefordshire and what sort of price I could get one fitted they never said weather Cat 1 or Cat 2? Mine may well just be disconnected I have a red LED on steering column that does not light up and plenty of wires underneath doing nothing,What and where elses should I look /test to see if I have one? Thanks

If you do have one but it's disconnected (because it's faulty?) and you have no fob on your keyring I think it is possibly best to start again with a nice new modern one.

No suggestion for a reputable installer (did my own) but perhaps worth asking on the regional forums?

Carl baker is the name that always pops up when talking about TVR alarms, I believe he works through Taylor TVR in Kent every so often. I know it's not quite as handy as you were looking for though

If his website is still up to date then it confirms work every so often with Taylor TVR

www.tvruk.tv

Might be worth a call anyway, I believe he moved to France a couple of years back but still does work every so often.

Happily to be proved wrong though

Cheers, I found Carl Baker on searches but too far from me. Will ask local Garage if they fit or know of anyone!

Blimey that's a big saving, but if you don't mind me asking what is that of the total cost?

Who are you insuring with? I managed to get classic cover and whilst I understand everyones circumstances are different it cost me £90 but with limited mileage of 5000 per year.

I didn't have any no claims as I've been driving a company car for the past 10 years.

£90/yr for 5000miles? Who are you with? I thought I was doing well with £114 for 1500miles with free home start and European cover!

Adrian Flux Renewal Quoted £475 fully comp 5000 miles BD cover ect... I dont build up no claims and lost mine as I have had a company van.RH classic Quoted £200 with Immobiliser, rang Adrian Flux to Cancel they got it down to £180 wanted to tell them to stick it for not offering £180 in the first place but at least no immobiliser, as didnt want one anyway! I have also found out this week from insuring my other car that you save a fortune by not insuring on the same day and also which day counts, Tuesday worked out about £40 cheaper than anyother day even if I left it longer? Still over £500 to insure the Carina!

Have you tried speaking to a decent local insurance broker as you should be able to get some form of ex-company vehicle no claims bonus on the Carina

Met David today when I went down with a friend to get a spare fob sorted out and coded, really nice guy and certainly seemed to "know his stuff".

And if you're lucky he may even give you one of his fridge tool box magnet business cards smile

I am with Peter James insurance and they are very understanding of our needs and sensible on limited mileage use.
As far as immobilisers go I have a removable link in the battery lead, they are happy with that as it requires knowledge, time and bonnet access to restore power. Perhaps not as convenient in use as an electronic immobiliser but it doesnt mess with the electrics and acts as a convenient battery isolator. Doesn't have any recoding or similar problems on my car but it may on later ones?

I would think the only issue with something like that, or "secret" immobilizer switches etc. is that they are not automatic.... they rely on you remembering (or being bothered) to operate them scratchchin

I do take your point on that Mike, nevertheless the insurers welcomed it. I wanted it anyway as we have always installed them on rally cars for a fast cut off in the event of an accident to make fire less likely, even more of a consideration of course in a g.r.p. car.

Part of the problem is deciding if you want to deter theft...or...reduce insurance premium...my company has a problem with this! Thatcham, who do the insurers approvals wil only approve if you pay them to do tests....

For me it was for insurance purposes, got it down without having immobilizer. rarely lock mine, leave windows open/roof off. Sleep next door to it though!

I didn't hear that...they are unlikely to pay out if you tell them it was nicked when left un-locked with the roof off, etc....immobiliser or not.

...but don't be fraudulent either... wink
