I believe I may need a new steering rack, because there is slight lost motion in the straight ahead position, and would like to find one that could be made to fit the S2, since original ones seem to be unavailable. I once did this job on a Daimler Dart (nowadays a standard mod- I was an early adopter in 1971). I used a Triumph 2000 unit- at the NEC I discovered they now use a Spitfire rack. Has anyone any experience of fitting a different rack on an S2, indeed of trying a Spit unit, perhaps?
I also want to replace the drive shafts CVs, or perhaps complete shafts. Does anyone know how to identify the correct ones to buy?

New racks, as you say, are rare as "hens teeth" but they do exist.

(that looks like my kitchen floor wink )

Many a tired rack has been brought back to life with a five minute shim removal

Lateral thinking..... a well known and respected ex-owner, Barkychoc, fitted a Chimaera power steering rack to his S, these racks are also very rare so an option is to replace with a Subaru WRX rack.
So, in theory, the Subaru rack should fit an S? Some "modifications" are required to couple the steering shaft/UJ.
No idea if there were any non power steering Scoobies (doubtful, thinking about it), so find a Chimaera owner converting his non power steering car to Subaru and buy his old steering rack... and hope it fits!

Wouldn't recommend stainless bolts for the rack mounting, hitting a big pot hole or "kerbing it" could create a big and sudden shock. Stainless may well be ok but it's steering why take the risk?

I bought some alloy rack mounts from this guy www.tjmotorsport.co.uk/ back in 2009, Website won't open for me, could be he's out of business?
Main body of rack is Chevette so look for someone who sells bits for up-grading Vauxhalls, Mr TJ was into classic rally prep.

Interesting link Mike, worth adding? This guy obviously has some good stuff and I did look particularly at Chevette. He does a recon fast rack. Maybe he can build a rack using our steering arms? He also had steering mountings and a heavy duty steering joint which interests me.

Having had problems with a play in the steering, it would also be worth checking the bush/bearing where the steering column passes through the bulkhead. When the original bulkhead bush in my car gave up, it felt just like the steering rack was very worn. Interestingly, taking another shim out of the steering rack made it feel better although I lost the self centre effect as I assume it was a bit too tight. Putting a new bearing kit in from MLP transformed the handling of the car, and meant I have been able to put back almost all of the original shims in the steering rack.

Thanks Mike, the site didn't work when I checked it originally either, all good now.

I do have slight play and it was an advisory on it's last MOT so I think I'll replace both UJ's and the bulkhead bearing whilst it's off the road. I'm just a little unsure as I understand that the (unsure of technical term) rod that links upper and lower UJs should be marked before removal, what do you do if it could do with a lick of paint? I may as well have it done whilst my other bits are off to be coated.

Thanks
Lawrie

No need to mark it but the UJ's should go back on "in phase" ..............

Thanks for all the useful steering tips guys. I will certainly work through them before doing anything more drastic. Can anyone offer any ideas about the driveshaft UJs?
