Hi everyone , I'm a new owner to a V8s in need of a lot of love !

The chassis and suspension have had work recently but everything else needs work . I'm doing the headgasket and all other top gaskets as I have a boiling expansion tank and emulsified oil in the cap. It also has water coming out the valve cover , not sure what's up there.
I'm looking for the passenger side exhaust manifold so I can at least get it running before I start the body and interior in the spring/ summer . Anyone have one knocking about?.

Also where are the best places for :
Interior parts
Roof
Engine parts

Is it possible to change from the distributor system to a electronic ignition?

Thanks in advance

Interior parts... you'll need to be more specific, parts come from many sources/suppliers

Roof... complete or re-cover?

Engine parts... Huge list of suppliers, standard rebuild parts or up-grades? (check out the Chimaera Forum)

Is it possible to change from the distributor system to a electronic ignition?.... Yes, but sounds like you have bigger priorities at the moment! biggrin
ETA. as you no doubt know, the V8s is quite rare, if they'll fit you'll probably have more luck finding some Chimaera pre-cat manifolds, there are a lot more around and subsequently more chance of someone up-grading to stainless or "go faster" manifolds scratchchin

Thanks for the reply , I will have a look for the chimera manifolds.

Would need a complete roof .
The wood veneer trim parts are completely destroyed , so need new items if available . Most of the switches are badly worn as well.

Engine parts would be std rebuild parts and service items.

the cars going to be pretty much stripped so the ignition should be a simple enough job .biggrin

For the roof there are a number of options; D&C Trim, Dave the trimmer etc. A search on any of the forums on PH will throw up plenty of answers.

Wood veneer: London Carriage craft; Classical dash in High Wycombe.

Engine information: I tend to use the Chimaera or Griff forums; as Mike said above, V8S's are quite rare and there is not the depth of V8 knowledge on the S forum. The guys on the Chimaera forum seem to be forever changing their ignition setups and a search on there will throw up plenty of information.

Switches: - The ones on the centre console can be replaced with TR7 switches, Rimmer brothers should be able to help; I think the rear fog light switch is different, but they can be stripped and cleaned up. The column switches are Ford Escort MK 3 or Sierra I think.

Your first port of call should be the alternative parts list:

Depending on your view towards money, a Surrey Roof could be an option worth considering. I've got them for both my TVRs and they are a great change.

Frees up boot space and a lot easier to get in there compared to the targa panels. Also, imho, easier to fit than the two targas - you can fit and remove without dropping the rear section.

Google search will find you the maker.

£600ish though.

I know they had a complete, newly covered roof for sale. If you get it can I have first refusal on your old one please?

Good luck.

Welcome to ownership of the great S...and a group of very helpful if slightly weird owners... You will not regret it.

Don't worry about the condition of the back of your roof...Joe has a plan...there is a thread on this forum about his idea....they said it couldn't be done... wink

have a think about a tonneau cover instead? that way no expensive roof. I'm looking to do the same but have added problem due to full roll cage.

Do-able I recon as the dash is very slightly higher than the back edge. I'll make a mock-up (with an M) and talk to a truck sheeting company

The engine is mostly standard 3.9 RangeRover with a few SD1 bits like the flywheel, I think the tvr modifications are just higher compression by skimming a bit off the heads, a different cam and modified dizzy (at least someone had adjusted maximum advance on mine with a grinder) so gaskets, service parts etc are from wherever you like. It's entirely possible that in true TVR style they're all different though (and they have had 20 years of people poking at them) so you could find anything at all when you pull it apart.

Exhaust manifolds are I think unique to the S as the chim/griff exhaust has a rather different y piece setup. I think you can fit both manifolds and y piece from a chim/griff but you'd have to change the lot and can't mix and match, ACT do both v8s and chim/griff stuff though.

There are plenty of options for not having a distributor, I have VEMS on mine. The distributor drives the oil pump on the 3.9 though so you still need the bottom half of it.

Pre cat Griff manifolds are the same (well in looks at least) to the V8S - I am not sure there are any pre cat Chim's as it came later.

Thanks for all the help , wil give a good head start.

On a slightly differant note, has anyone had water leaking from one of the valve covers ? The drivers side seems to leak quite a lot of coolant!

Are you sure the leak is from the rocker covers? There are coolant piles which run in the valley and can leak from the areas where they join onto the rubber pipes. Under normal circumstances there is no way coolant can get into the space inside the rocker covers.

That's exacltly what I was thinking , the outside of the covers shows quite bad corrosion . It's comng apart so will just have a look .
I'll check and replace the pipes as there in there just incase

Shows what I know smile

Having snapped the rear window on mine at the weekend because I refused to drive in the lovely sunshine with the roof up I'll soon be in a position of knowing just how hard it is to change the roof. Hopefully I'll find space and time to make some new lightweight panels while I'm doing it as the standard roof is ridiculously heavy smile
