I doubt I can lay claim to a new idea, but....

Just fitted some new headlights, bowls, inner and outer rings.

The outer ring removed from the car has a small right angle bracket attached to the ring, which then is screwed to the body of the car, rather than using the original design of screwing through the ring in to the plastic bowl itself. The brackets were rusted through and could not be re-used on the new rings.

Rather than attach a metal bracket to the ring (and risk scratching the car as the ring is put on and taken off), I have pop rivet attached a short length of furniture safety strapping to the ring, and then screwed through the strap in to the body of the car. The straps came with some flat pack furniture from Ikea and are designed to attach tall furniture to the wall. Each strap is enough to do 4 headlights, so there is plenty spare to experiment. Once cut I heated the end of the strap with a lit match to prevent fraying, and the holes for the screws and pop rivet were made with the tip of a soldering iron. I know the strap looks long on the photo, but it is not visible unless you get down to below headlight level.

That is the first of the winter jobs completed.
