Is that film from the family archive Tony ?

Was your grandfather an itinerant French racing driver ?

I expect to see you in a beret very soon !
Niiige, I'm surprised you didn't know that Tony's grandpere was the famous French "pilote" Antoine de Bourne, a very dashing figure back in those pioneering days of real motor racing.
"Bourne-Bourne", as he was known, was very popular sur la piste, especially with the ladies, who thought he was very sweet. In spite of his hard exterior, he had a soft centre which they all loved.
When the wraps were off, few of his contemporaries could keep up with his pace and skillful handling of those dangerous curves.

What a man!

Well I never knew that. It makes sense now, thinking about it. Tony drinks wine with a real flair - it's obviously genetic !

Surely you must have seen those grainy images of him in his pure white mechanic's overalls, a patriotic light grey, white and black tricolour cravat, and early aviator's goggles over a beret which tapered aerodynamically with a slight upward kink at the back for extra down force to help give him that crucial edge over his rivals. He even spurned the then popular Hercule Poirot/ Inspector Clouseau curly moustache because he considered it would increase wind resistance.
He became one of my heroes in my late teens, and has remained so until this day.

scratchchin Perhaps that's why I think light grey pale blue cars are the best!

And perhaps also my love of a fine St. Emilion.

One would never spray that about like a fire extinguisher as is the vulgar custom nowadays with that overrated Champagne stuff. yuck

No Paul, I was referring to young TurboTony's famous grandfather on his father's mother's side, who was one of the greatest French racing drivers of all time.
You should have seen him on the piste back then, he was in a class of his own.

Well done Glen for such a thorough piece of research. It was unfortunate that grandpere passed away in 1982 when I was but two years old so most of the stories have been handed down through the family.

Just to add some other stories. Although a French national he was also half Italian, half Eng!ish, half Spanish and half Cuban (he was a big man).

A lot of his success was,as Glen points out, down to St.Emilion but not many people know that he flouted convention by having a couple of celebratory bouteiles of premier cru before the race rather than after the chequered flag.

Of course, the parties at his domaine, Le Chateau d'Isle Reput are the stuff of legend.

As he was known for starting at the back of the grid and finishing first, I feel he would have been at home in the GTS....

Haha, I generally log on when something goes wrong with my S2, so just goes to show how reliable it's been lately!
If there's no spaces left, then no worries - thought I might be pushing it by getting involved now smile

Thanks Mike but it's hard to ignore this thread, it's hardly left the first page since I started it! I did tick the box to be notified of replies but within a couple of days my email had melted so I cancelled it!!

Euro rate at John Lewis is 1.377 today. I've just bought some so that means there must be a better rate out there somewhere laugh
