Replacement Fuel Tank
Discussion
Afternoon to the collective.
There are a lot of historic threads about replacement fuel tanks, nothing recent though.
Does anyone know whether there is a suppier of stainless steel or ally fuel tanks available or if there is someone they recommend to make one up?
If bespoke is the only option, what to improve?
The level reader for a start.
Baffles.
That foam stuff inside the tank.
Anything else?

Lovely quality, had baffles but not foam (bit overkill in a road car anyway).
You're not trying hard enough Samy undertakes track duties too so thought it might be a sensible option.
Thanks for the link I shall call them in due course. Might forego the replacement suspension for now.
The old tank IS restorable, believe me. After a lot of research I came upon what appears to be the only company in the UK with an agency for a proven American system. I went though this very carefully with the firm, with photos at every stage. A very impressive process. I am afraid I have just been too busy so far to do the write up I promised for Sprint. Speak to Stan Lamb at Hartlepool Radiator, 01429 236300. Mention please that you go the lead from the TVR forum. Very decent and straightforward to deal with. Can be sent and returned by mail order, or worth visitng the excellent Hartlepool Maritime Museum if you take it to them!
I think they may have just done, or are about to do, a tank for another forum member.

I got a tank made up by a local aluminium fabricator when I lived near Ipswich and I think it cost me around 250 quid. The level sender arrangement is different in that it is clamped in position with a ring held in place with a lot of bolts. There is no tea strainer muck filter on the output so I think I should get round to putting an in line filter in the output.
I know there's rust in the tank, just don't know how much. Given the opportunity I find myself in it would seem sensible to future proof the tank. The tank is full at the moment - and whilst it has been laid up.
It'll be pricey, but the Radtech option should be a spec, receive, fit and forget item. Not that it's a done deal. I'll see if I can find a local fabricator who can build a tank and incorporate my changes (baffles, foam and a new level indicator sender - ATE have been recommended) with out the need for micro managing.
If it turns out my tank is easily refurbed I'll offer it out to the community so that others can get a new tank without taking the car off the road for more than a day.
I do remember an old thread about someone doing them in stainless for £120 or something, but there being no interest. Shame.

Unless the difference between stainless (or ally) over mild steel is marginal, why go down that route? The mild steel ones have lasted 20+ years so a new one will take you to maybe 2040. Are you going to keep it that long? What to improve? If I was doing this I'd move the sender unit location and while I was at it, the fuel pump. I'd fit a top mounted combined submersed pump/sender accessed by an inspection cover under the boot carpet. I'd choose a unit from a mass produced model to ensure availability of replacements and, if I was feeling brave, I'd go the whole hog, do a "Phillpot" with the filler cap, sorry, can't find the post but it's on here somewhere.
I forgot about the fuel pump! I'll have another chat with Radtech as they had instant advice on a revised sender so I assume it's a regular change for them.
Reason for change? Well simplicity for doing the job for starters. Old one out, new one in. Baffles and foam will be a (hopefully not ever needed) safety measure for trackdays. Bit of weight saving too. Got to keep up with you V8 boys somehow

....My ally tank is 50% lighter tan my old steel tank and holds 2 gallons more.
The extra capacity makes very good sense - for touring. But if you're concerned about weight and track-day performance note that the extra two gallons adds an extra 9Kgs to a full load, off set by whatever 50% of the weight of the tank might be. If it's performance you want then maybe go for a smaller tank and less weight all round. Sorry, just being logical Gassing Station | S Series | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
